| South Texas is known for some really nice trophy size White Tail Deer, so people come from all over the world to hunt here. I've personally seen some monsters over the years and thoroughly enjoy watching them in the wild. However, I am not much of a deer hunter myself, in fact the only deer I've ever shot was with a camera. So I have many photos of all sizes of beautiful deer and may paint some of the elusive "Trophy Bucks" someday . . .
For these pieces I wanted to capture the simplicity and beauty of the more frequently seen regular size deer in their natural environment.

| These were painted form a couple of the photos I took several years ago of fairly common young bucks on a ranch down in deep south Texas.

| Thanks ya'll . . . These were #3 & #4 in my wildlife series and the first ones I tried that large. Up to that point, I had been working with a 12" x 18" pad. When I ran out of paper and went to the supply store, they were out of that size so I got 18" x 24" thinking I would just cut them in 1/2. Well for some reason I thought I'd try a couple at the full size and have only done a couple smaller ones since then. (not wildlife though)
It's a comfortable size for me . . . not too large and not too small. I'm still wanting to do some really large pieces, like the *over the sofa* size. Maybe 3' x 4' or larger . . . but I haven't run across any watercolor paper that large yet. I may end up doing something that large with acrylics. ?

| Wonderful, GD. they're beautiful! You can get watercolor paper in big rolls and cut whatever size you want. It's probably 3-4' wide. Cheaper in the long run than buying the sheets in pads, too. Do you have an art supply store nearby? I haven't bought it online, but you might be able to track it down for a decent price.

| Thanks Gram :)
I have heard about the rolls, but I've never seen them at any of the art stores around here. I may have to check online or maybe one of the larger supply outlets can special order one for me?
Wow . . . just think . . . a HUGE roll of watercolor paper . . . I may never find time to stop and water the plants . . . lol :D |

| I really had to look twice when I read that the medium is watercolor, I assumed it was a pastel. I just can't get over the detail - its wonderful! |

| Thanks everyone for all the kind words and comments :)
It's kind of funny that this thread pop'd back up to the top - since I just put these in frames a few days ago. (Funny how that works sometimes)
After I painted these (several years ago) I was not sure if I would keep them or give them to someone in my family that is a "big deer hunter". They were the first paintings I had done this large (18" x 24") at that time and I didn't have any frames handy that they would fit in. So I placed them in my leather portfolio and there they stayed until last week.
I recently made some frames out of some old "barn wood" and it occured to me that these may look good in that style frame. I cut some cream colored mats with a chocolate accent border and got these paintings out and mounted them in the new frames just to see how they'd look.
I'm think'n they fit this style frame ok . . . See what ya'll think?

| Really nice work Rankin. Those would look great on the walls back at the ranch. Somewhere between the elks, whitetails and rattlesnakes :o)
Took me two years...but I just noticed this old...old thread. I was prowling around other forums and came across a few of your posts. Also enjoyed the acrylic horse paintings. Awesome!!!
