| I thought that I would share yet another style of art that I grew to love over the years. Since I was so active with several Intertribal groups and made alot of acquaintances thru these organizations, I was shown several methods of beadwork popular with many different native Nations. Although porcupine quills were and still are a popular, traditional form of work, the czech seed bead has become the bead of choice amongst those who live and dance on the powwow circuit. Porcupine quills are beautiful adornments but can be difficult to handle...and not for the faint of heart...or rather, not for me, lol. So I thought that I would share my peyote stitched drumstick and my loom work for the bag. I'll find some of my key chains and hair sticks as soon as I can. :) Hope I can find other folks still working with these wonderful methods.. :) Click the image for an enlarged view.

| How interesting, roadrunner.. :) Yeah, those tiny size 18's are quite hard to find...I actually found some in Santa Fe, NM once...and was thrilled to finally find some that small...I use to have to order them especially for peyote work. Cut seed beads are much nicer for peyote style...but are usually quite a bit more expensive. I have a fan handle that I would really love to bead..since I have the wing in place...but I just can't seem to ever find the time to get started.
Thanks again for your nice comments, all. I'm not sure why the term "peyote" is applied to this particular style of beading. A traditional person would have to explain it to me again...but it lies somewhere in a type of symbol that was popular on beaded gourds, and other belongings. And of course, the peyote cactus is a very important part of some native ceremonies still performed near my hometown in deep South Texas.
lol Nada...well, ya just have to squint real hard and keep your hands steady.. :) |

Nice to see that you're attending pow wows... :) I sure miss hittin' the "trail"...and all of that fry bread..lol...but work AND a mortgage have had to take the front seat..lol But I still have about 3 shawls...and allll of my pow wow t-shirts..lol. :)
I just found a few more pieces that I had stored away. For the life of me, I can't seem to find any matching sets of beaded earrings...but I'll keep trying. This particular photo just has an odd assortment of things that I made. A few key chains...the 2 with no rings are my real beginners...lol...not alot of detail...the loom work is from an illustration of I believe a Navajo, Zuni or Hopi celestial being...corn perhaps? I can't remember...And then I made some hair sticks when my hair was reeeal long at one time.. (not anymore!) lol...
The second photo shows quill work...which of course was the original style of decorating. I wish that I could say it was my work...but I bought it from a Lakota craftsman at a pow wow on the T'ono O'odham reservation in Tucson. (please forgive me if I butchered that spelling..but its pretty close..lol)

| Well...my brother actually made me about 4 of them in different sizes...they seem to be real easy to make...I just don't know the wood sizes...and all of my looms back at my parent's house are MIA...lol Its really just 2 small squares of wood...one for each side...perhaps 5 to 8" wide...with a 1 x 2 nailed on each side sort of like a shoe box. A nail is placed in the outside middle of the wood squares and grooves cut into the top of the squares..so that your string can be attached to the outside nail...and all of the threads run into the groove to the other nail...the grooves there to seperate your thread. I'm terrible at describing this sort of thing...and wish I could find one of my homemade ones to show you...lol

And of course you can start out with a blank graph and make your own patterns too. There's a newer upgrade than the edition I have with more bells and whistles. Here's the site to tell you more

| Mine came with the threaded rod size for seed beads, but we added a rod sized for delica's. I see they have one model set up for delica's now. To change sizes, it's just a matter of using the plastic cable ties to hold the rod in place. I have the 18 x 18" size. I wanted one big enough for any project I might want to tackle - lol.

I'm really really wanting to get back into my beadwork and drawings..and perhaps with winter coming on...I'll be able to. Gardening during this time of course wanes...so those dark cold days will be able to be used for something else. :) I have a fan that I made some years ago...with a handle that I carved holding an owl wing that I've been wanting to bead for some time. MAYBE I'll be able to get that started this winter. :)

I suspect that pulling the thread through at the end of a row will make a tangled mess. I might try it and then again probably won't. I hate to untangle thread.

Someone asked about what the peyote meant, I think I remember reading something about being named after the peyote root they carried in the bag made from that stitch, or maybe I dreamed it.

| Yeah, that is sort of what I mentioned in my opening comment about the origins of the peyote stitch. Peyote cactus buttons are still harvested near my house in the brush country of South Texas for Easter time celebrations and private rituals by Native American folks...being a hallucinagenic. I still can't, for the life of me, figure out why this type of stitching is called "peyote stitch"...unless it sort of represents the circle of the peyote cactus...peyote stitching being traditionally round, i.e., fan handles, hair sticks, etc.
Perhaps a traditional person will find this thread and let us know.. :)

| Hi All
Ebay sales kept me busy through Christmas and then we went to Florida. Just got home on Sun night. Here's my loom project so far. I'll be able to get back to work on it this week. You can see the pattern is starting to come into view. It's kind of a celestial pattern - crescent moon with a bear.
I'll be working the front and back of the bag as one piece and then when it comes off the loom, the sides of the bag will be stitched together.
