Well, I've been lollygagging around on the new Artisans Forum since it was introduced and thought that I would eventually contribute some of my own personal work. Although beadwork is one form of art that I practice...graphite pencil drawings and acrylic abstracts are another...tho long overdue for a sit-down with a pad and 6b pencil. :) Soooo...since it seems to be a quiet afternoon around here...and the day bright and saturated (thanks to our rare rain yesterday), I thought that I would post a few things and let ya'll have a look-see.. :)
I'll post a few things that I worked on in High School...and move on to my acrylics and even further on to my pencil drawings... :) Hope ya'll enjoy... :)

This first one was one of many that I did in High School..'82 or '83, taken from the Stan Lee book of "Faeries." :)

And then I found the many joys and creative beauty of Edward Curtis' historic native photography from the turn of the century. These wonderful photos have always intrigued me...spiking my curiosity about the lives of these folks...and in that, I decided to strike up my pencil and work on my own renditions of these old black and white images.. :)

Her face upclose on a paper copy. My mother has the original drawing...so this paper copy doesn't have the resolution or depth that original graphite would hold...but you can get the idea.. :)

This particular drawing was a gift for a Tigua Pueblo friend from El Paso. Again, he has the original, lol...and this is a paper copy.. :)

And this is one my originals...lol...Yes, those are my elbows in the reflection...lol
I honestly don't have alot of my originals left...since the greatest joy for me as an artist...is to give my pieces away to family and friends as momentos.. :)

This is a drawing that I did after seeing this particular painting on a calender that I fancied...I don't remember who the original artist is...but loved her work and made this illustration all my own.. :)

This one I did because I simply loved her expression in the photo. A quiet dignity... :)

And then on to my acrylics...which quite honestly, I have backwards since my paintings were first before the drawings...lol...Ah well...its all in the "seeing", I reckon. :) I'm posting just a few of my large abstracts...since the rest are in storage. I used sand, plaster and string for texture with thin, overlaid acrylic washes for depth and shadow...finishing them up with hand held brushes for hi-lighting. Sort of an interesting mix...and a huge variety of color variations using so many different wash techniques.. :)

You can see a bit more detail of the surface of this particular painting. One neat thing about photog. these paintings, each frame seems to be a mini composition...lol

Here is another painting...this one photo being upclose to show some detail...color palettes can be widely varying on this type of painting...but you have to be careful and watch for "overkill", like GD said, and knowing when its time to stop...lol

And the last one...This one I called "sunrise"...sometimes we really don't know why we call abstract paintings the things that we do...but it just seemed appropriate.. lol...Notice the orange and yellow middle shadowing.. :)

These ROCK! TxT . . . you shouldn't be so mean to your graphite pencils and paint brushes . . . you need to let them come out and play more often. Very nice show of variety too . . . from extreme detail to abstracts with great moods in color! Thanks for share'n :)

*blush* Awww...cut it out, GD... ;p lol

Well, I wish I DID have more time for the creative side of me that I use to nurture...but alas, a full-time job and a 30 yr mortgage have encroached upon my artist muse.. : / But I do agree...I really really want to start working again...esp since the Winter is coming...dark, chilly days comin' our way.. :)

lol aprilwillis...naww...I'm just bashful...lol...Even tho I have a BFA in painting...I was always too shy about pricing and hanging my work...which really, really defeats the purpose of a degree...unless you're going to teach and get certified... :)
We're all amateurs, if ya really think about it...since there are so many new things to learn everyday... :)

Tx - You have obvious talent, and an ability to show
character in the face of your subjects. Very nice work.
Thanks for sharing.

By the way, an amateur is someone who does something
for the LOVE of it. Amo, amas, amat.
Too bad it has become synonymous with a beginner.

It seems that folks here at DG love doing a bunch of things.
A lovely crowd to hang around with . :o )

Thank you, Mahnot...and you are absolutly right...the word amateur has such a connotation of being a beginner...or someone who is inexperienced. We all have the abilitiy to learn the things that we love most in life... :)

lol Josephine... :) Thanks.. :)

And yes...these folks are really something. Full of kindnesses, knowledge, humor, care, sympathy and color.. :)

I think you should hang up your amateur status and start earning some $$$ from that wonderful God-given talent. It would help with that 30 year mortgage!

Like my son the artist, who has very few of his own pieces, you need to build up your inventory. Once you get several pieces together, you'll change your mind I think. Especially with all the encouragement from your fans.
