Was at a gourd ladies monthly meeting and our hostess showed us her latest "art".

She melts crayon on a thin piece of plywood she has painted black...then uses her "trusty little flame thrower to melt the crayon...then tilts the board to run the liquid crayon around to form the patterns.

I thought it was neat. Jo

Very cool and beautiful ! Wish Daddy had thought so when we were travelling as kids and left the crayons up on the dashboard. Melted all down in the speakers. No radio the rest of the trip...and no more coloring.

THREE days on the road with three kids in July in a car with no AC. I couldn't imagine doing that these days.

We did batik on fabric using crayons in Art in school. Ironed the wax back out. That was pretty cool too but not too much control.

Yep. Every summer on Daddy's 30 day leave. He was stationed at Lackland AFB. so I grew up in San Antonio. Graduated from South San. Mom's still there. We were there when we evacuated this time last year for RITA. Mom's on the south side just outside of Lackland. What part of San Antonio do you live GD?

Ahh ok . . . I know the area well. I used to live over in Somerset, not far from Lackland. Now I'm over by 1604 & 37 South out off of old Mathis Rd. I grew up in SA too, so I know pretty much the entire area fairly well.

Hey Maiden!

I was reading that (without looking at who wrote it) and I thought to myself, I remember a trip just like that! HAHAHAHA I **WAS** there! Good Lord that was a long trip! It was probably me that left the crayons on the dash, although I usually had to sit in the back seat.

Hi GD! I see you've met my sister Connie (Maidentheshade). Have you seen any more of those cool dragonflies lately? Better yet... have you painted any of them? Where did you go to school there in SA?

Hi Janet,

lol yeah . . . I didn't know that Maiden was your sister of course . . . that's cool :)

In fact I just uploaded a handful of new dragonfly pics to the BugFiles pages yesterday. I haven't posted them in the photos or wildlife forums yet tho, so you'll have to check my page/images or click here http://davesgarden.com/bf/imagesbyuser.php?user=GD_Rankin for the thumbnail listing. My PC's motherboard crashed a week or so ago and I've been busy rebuilding this rascal so no I haven't had much time to do any paint'n lately. Hopefully soon though :)

I went to a few different schools . . . McCollum, Mac, Marshall . . . take your pic . . . lol

Morning GD,

Just checked out your pics and I'm amazed that you see so many different kinds of dragonflies. As a kid, I don't remember noticing the difference in them. They were all just dragonflies. You've taken some awesome photos to add to the bugfiles.

We lived in the same house, which my mother still lives in, over by Lackland. Both Connie and I graduated from South San (The old one). Mom will be heading back to SA from Virginia within a week or so. Connie and I plan to visit her sometime after she returns to Texas. We'll use the excuse of visiting with Mom to make the trip. But we'll mostly be shopping the Goodwill stores there. Mom likes to shop at the thrift stores, just not quite as much as Connie and I do. 8*}

Always good to see your font here. Sorry you've been having computer problems. My laptop has lost it's video, so I'm having to add an external monitor to it. A friend has donated his old laptop to the cause, but I can't seem to get the network card to work on his machine. I'm not giving up though! I will persevere!!!

Aww thanks . . . Those little rascals are hard to sneak up on and there is tons more types than I ever realized too . . that's for sure.

lol @ PC's . . . can't live with'em and can't toss'em in the creek huh? I hear ya @ I will persevere . . . that's the same thing I said when I thought I lost all my data files. I think I finally got all the important stuff back anyway. What a hassle . . . That'll teach me to update my backup disks more often!!!

South San huh? That's cool . . . I used to live not too far from there . . . out in Somerset. In fact my dad still lives over that way. :D @ Goodwill . . . ya'll should hook up with TxTurqoize that posts on here. She's some sort of honcho with Goodwill and can likely point ya'll to all the good stores - based on what sort of things ya'll like - if ya know what I mean? ;)

Bama . . . that's pretty cool stuff . . . thanks for share'n the links :) I used to use crayons for coloring my wax when making candles when I was a kid. And I can even remember (when I was much younger) melting them and letting them drip down Coke bottles and stuff . . . lol

I'm sure there are Goodwill's there in SA that we are missing out on. We found 4-5 when we evacuated to SA last year. We left here with a couple of pairs of shorts and a few shirts, thinking we'd be back by the end of the weekend. Little did we know we'd stay there for 2 weeks. Sure made for lots of shopping! AAAAAAAAAwwwww! HAHAHAHAHAHA What we won't do for a good excuse to shop! We'll definitely hook up with TxT. And as for what we're into... if it's cool and we like it... it goes into the buggy. :-)

eh? What? Did someone say my name? *cupping ear* lol...Yes, indeed...like GD said, I'm sort of a "honcho" at Goodwill...lol..Naw...actually I'm part of the management team at a Goodwill store here in SA. Its one of the bigger stores and I also appraise alot of antiques and vintage stuff for our silent auctions. :) I've probably seen you at our store, lol..tho I wouldn't recognize the two of you, lol. Glad to hear that you enjoy shopping at the stores. I went shopping at our store myself today...on my day off no less! Found all sorts of neat stuff and great clothes too, lol.
Let me know which ones you go to...and I'll let ya know which one I think is the best. Well, OUR store of course, lol :)

Hi Melanie,

The stores we visited most often (during that 2 weeks) were the one on Babcock Road (Loved that one), the one on Marbach Road, the one on Military Drive (close to 35 South). We did go to the Clearance store on Pleasanton Road and had lots of fun diggin' through the bins there. Came up with this little fella. The rim around his head was broken in the back, but I didn't care because I was planning on planting something in him.

Mom should be back in SA next Sunday. Sometime soon Connie and I will plan a visit to SA to visit. Hopefully we can meet ya then.

Janet

Oh this is so exciting ! I hope we do run into you TX T, and also you GD while we are in San Antonio. That would be fun ! This whole house is furnished with GW finds. It's taken many years to accumulate a household but I love each piece and can just about remember when and where each was discovered. It's thrilling to find things that are treasures to us but discards for someone else. Oh ! Last week I found this "not working" for 20 bucks.Just needed a little oil on the workings and some TLC. It works! :)

We'll definitely do that. I'm not sure where DeZavala is though. I'll have to get my bearings on the location. I used to work out I10 East at one of the UHauls that was there, Roland Ave., if I remember right. I don't think it's there any more.

Can't believe we missed a store! HAHAHAHA I'll have to let Mom know about your store. She's real funny about driving there in SA. Certain times of the day, she wouldn't dream of getting in her car and going places. It's strange... but we love her anyway! HAHAHAHA

We're always looking for thrift stores to find treasures. Connie and I have mostly similar tastes (Pier 1ish) except when it comes to antiques (30's, 40's and 50's kind of stuff). She recognizes the stuff from that era and loves those things and I'm like eh... waving hand... I can live with them, or without them. It never ceases to amaze us the "high" we get from treasure hunting. Even if we come home empty handed, the thrill of the hunt was there to sustain us.

As for clothes... well, we have 50 cent days on Sunday and Monday. Anything clothing or textile with certain colored tags are 50 cents.

I noticed that the SA Goodwills don't have or honor the Customer Value Cards (I refer to them as Get Outta Goodwill Free [GOGF] Cards) where you get a stamp for each $15 purchase. It encourages folks to spend at least $15 and encourages repeat customers. When the card is full (10 stamps) you get to choose $15 of merchandise and GOGF! They knew what they were doing when they implemented that here. I've used (redeemed) probably 20 cards over the past few years. I know that won't work for all Goodwills, but it's food for thought.

Talk to ya soon!
Janet

btw, that photo was taken right after I planted that stuff in his head (don't get me to lying about what the "stuff" is!) His "hair" has gotten so long that I do believe our heathen needs a haircut!

Whassup Connie!

Any more brilliant wild hairs about the tile? RM said to let the little dudes in orange at HD know what you are looking for. He said to offer to pay for them. They will most likely save you some in a box and give them to you.

I had to get some freezer paper to wrap up the hog. As soon as RM gets his bones up from the recliner and helps me finish butchering him, I'll be bringing some to you. I'm sure you'll appreciate me getting rid of those unsightly hairs that the boys left on him last night at midnight! If there's enough time, we'll hit up the GW's, since we both have GOGF cards that are full! Yeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!

Not surprisingly, he's crashed. Let's go on to GW. We'll finish the hog when I get back. I sure ain't doing it alone! I'll cook him and don't mind the packaging of him. But I don't like the trimming part.

See you in a bit!

lol...I feel as tho we've hijacked poor roadrunner's thread here! Perhaps we should head over to Hometalk somewhere like in furnishings, etc, lol. Sorry Roadrunner...! :D

lol Nada...too funny! Do you work at the Shops at La Cantera...or in La Cantera itself? My sister was the first one to get married up there 5 or 6 years ago.. :) or was it 7...lol
I probably HAVE seen you there at GW, Nada...maybe even spoke to you..! And hope to high heaven that I helped to provide some great customer service for ya...lol

Yeah, Janet. I've seen those cards before that other customers have brought in. Our corporate office and retail directors were throwing that idea around for a while. But decided against it for now. You never know tho.. :)
