Never done it but have seen them. Very cool!! I have seen them done on HGTV. You might want to check them out and see if you can find anything. Good luck!!
Have done...used left over paints...did it one in checkerboard style...painted the entire section in lightest color, then taped and did checkerboard with darker co-ordinating color but at same time I left a 6" outer border so it would look more like a rug...made sure my 1st color was completely dry though before I taped the squares...then I did random free hand painting of leaves/buds and branches coming from the outer border into the squares...I did not give it a cover coat as I liked the aging of it...
I also do many matts on the backside linoleum..but I do finish them with flecto matt brush on varnish...
the above faux rocks was done on cement...the pictures of matts on site I included can be done even though you have division of boards..just don't pay attention to them..they'll look fine in the design..you hardly see them..
the black and white matt is not done..considering I don't know where to put it, I've no interest in completing it...but should and will...as for the matt underneath my table..it's about 3 years old..wears for years and years..would be fine under a roofed decking..if no roof then I'd certainly just paint it directly on the floor..I use the matt style when I know I'll be changing the color and them often...
