My sister (Sue) is a artist and works in mostly water colors now. She belongs to a local art club and they are doing a small show that has a theme related to it where they have to incorporate words in their project. Sue has decided she wants to use "Take more walks in the Garden" as her theme. She is having a problem deciding what to paint with this quote and wanted me to ask here if anyone could help with some ideas.

Sue just finished another one for this same show with the quote "Rome wasn't built in a day". I can't wait to see it.

Thank you all for your help. Any ideas are welcome.

BTW, I am not an artist like my sister, but I do have some artistic talent when it comes to other things. I love to faux paint and take old or unused items and recreate them in different ways. I just started another new project this week and I am taking pictures as I go so I can show you all what I am doing. I hope it comes out nice. lol

maybe she could put the words on plant stakes along a garden walkway? you know, the labels on the plants, but instead of the label saying 'cosmos' it would say 'take' and the next one would say 'more'

looking forward to seeing your project, too

Gram, thank you for taking the time to give me a great suggestion. I will pass this info along to my Sis.

I'm on my way to the craft store to look for some copper sheeting so I can continue my project.

How about stepping stones? They're relatively cheap, come in various sizes, and are readily available. Let me know if you need help on type of paint/sealers. I notice you're in Huntington Beach, I used to do a lot of craft shows in that area, and sold quite a bit of bricks there. I don't have a camera yet, so no pics.

You can buy kits for making stepping stones also. Check out your local craft stores to see what they've got.

I thought about making some long ago, but used to paint about 100 a week. At about 1.00 each it wasn't worth the time. Does your sister plan on making just one or lots of them? When do they need to be done by?

Betterbloom,

I'm sorry, but I think you have read my post in a different way. My Sis is going to paint a picture with the quote of "take more walks in the garden". She is not looking for ideas of what she could make for this theme. I do appreciate your creative thoughts though.

Gram, I told Sue about your clever idea and she liked it. If her creative juices come up with an idea that works with the markers, she might use it.

When I talked with her today, she is getting pretty stressed about this picture, as it has to be finished by Oct. 7th for the show. It wouldn't be bad, except she's having a hard time coming up with an idea for it. She just finished 3 other paintings for another show at the end of Oct., so her juices aren't flowing like normal. lol

How about doing something with a little poem that goes:

The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth.
One is closer to God's heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.

Okay, I think I got it now. So how about the back view of a lady walking thru an arbor into a springtime garden..? The arbor could have a sign hanging from it , or grams idea of a yardsigns?

Donna, she could still use the stepping stone idea in her painting if the garden signs don't work for her.

oooh, I like the picture you've created in my head, betterbloom. And I see wispy cosmos and butterflies. Her arm extended toward a butterfly perched on a bloom. It's nice!

I'm seeing a path turning the corner in the distance with big trees and the sunlight of morning coming in from the side. An old man reaching out his hand for a little girl (toddler age) as she hands him up a dandelion. Seen from behind.

Wow, you guys have some great ideas. See, that's what she wanted. I've been sending her your ideas and I think she has her head spinning with the final product.

Angie, I love your idea myself since I am a grandmother of a 4 yr.. It's like looking into a mirror of us in my garden.

I hope she can finalize her idea soon, as it has to be finished by Oct. 7th and she's cutting it close.

You are all so helpful, thanks

Hi Gram, thanks for thinking of my sis today. I will tell her you were asking about her. :-)

She barely made it to the deadline. She had a rough start, in that she tried using a watercolor canvas, which she had not used before, and realized that when the picture gets wet, the color comes off. So, she decided to use acrylics with some watercolor paints on it. I haven't seen it yet, and the show is today at 1pm, which I will be attending. I will take pictures of both her painting and post them tonight or in the morning.

When she described it to me the other day, I realized that she had used some of the elements in my garden and it made me proud. I can't wait to see it.

Like many artists, she is not that happy with this one...but that doesn't mean it's not good to any of us. lol

Hi everyone,

Sorry to keep you waiting, but I had a few computer problems on Sunday and I've been gone all day today too. I am going to start a new thread with the pictures. Will link it from here. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/659843/
