Thanks Monica,
Some of the big palms I had to get men with cranes but the rest was planted when it was small enough for me to handle. My poor husband and son had to dig some of the holes for me and we all did the pathways. My husband had the tea house built after I put up 3 of those gazebo kits and they blew away. This one survived Katrina. I'm thinking about painting it. But I can't decide between black and barnyard red. I'm trying for the oriental feeling.

Hydrangea80

That's what I was just sitting outside saying. I'm trying to absorb all my plants before the first frost which probably could come in Oct. or Nov. It seems like by the time I get everything cut back and it grows a little while it's winter again. But then again it might be so overrun I might not be able to get back there.

Glad you enjoyed it.

RainbowLake

Thanks.

I would have loved to show you. I drag anybody that's willing back there. It's my secret garden. Nobody would guess that it exists on the property. It is completely enclosed with an 8' cedar fence. People that live right down the street are shocked when they see it and can't believe that it's only been in existance for 10 years. I've had alot of the plants in pots for years so when they were put in the ground they exploded. Most of my plants are cuttings from Great Aunts' and my grandmother's yard.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Wow!! I love your garden!!! What a job you have done! I am very impressed.
Also the fact that most all your plants cames from cuttings is special. Your family passion lives on in your yard.
There is much to be said for cuttings; plants are awfully expensive. But what can we do; they bring us so much joy!
Your heart is in that garden, and it shows, congratulations!

Hi Christie you yard is great!!! I haven't got to meet you yet but have seen you on some of the forumns. Welcome!! I love your zone!!! I hate having to haul in my stuff or lose it.

Thank you for your kind words about my oasis. I got my love for gardening from my Grandmother. I've always had plants as long as I can remember. Just not this many. I've got to stop. Since joining DG I'm afraid it's getting worse.

LOL jeri!! I work at a botanical garden and get freebies all the time. Drives my dad nuts!! He says we have no more room for plants. I say we do but then you will lose your mowing time. I win!! LOL. I just plant everything close together.

My husband still has plenty to mow. I just claimed this section after the kids were raised.

Jeri11 - Just wanted to weigh in on your beautiful gardens and Zone envy that I'm experiencing right now!! Just gorgeous tropicals, and it was great to look at your pergola on the side of the house. I'm hoping to put one in this year, and yours is lovely - hope you don't mind if I copy it -
While everything here in 5a is brown (not even any snow this year), it's so nice to see the blooming roses, and tropical foliage. Thanks for sharing - Dax

Hi Dax

Thank you for your lovely comments on my oasis!!! I don't mind if you copy it in the least. I copied it from Southern Living about 20 years ago. My garden is on the west side of my house and that was the only shade back there for 15 years. I put the yard in about 10 years ago and now have a little more shade. My backyard looks pretty scary right now also but it won't be long before spring arrives and I can't wait.

Thanks Deborah. Can you tell I love it?

Last year was the first time I have even heard of angelonia. They did great too!! I liked the purple but they have a white with purple throat that is to die for. I took cuttings of them but I'm not sure they will make it and the ones in the ground may not come back.

You've inspired me! I'm in and out working in my pitiful beds. You had a plan plus patience and that's probably where I need to start. I thought your angel statue among your brugmansia was a very nice touch.

Please keep the pictures coming throughout the year.

Hi PrpleAster,

We're neighbors well just across the river neighbors!! I live in Central. Welcome to DG. I know you'll love it.

So glad you enjoyed the backyard, you'll have to come by in the spring and see it in person!!! It's nice with the cold weather that came thru last night to sit back and reflect on the accomplishments of last year and also the failures. I was just looking out the window at it and it's not a pretty picture right now.

You'll have to come to our 1st annual La. RU scheduled for June 9 in Monroe. All the DGers from the area are gonna meet and swap plants, eat and have a good time. Hoo Rah!! Our numbers are growing.

Looking forward to meeting you in person,

Where is Satsuma, Al. We have a Satsuma, La. that is maybe 20 miles from me. Do you have a pond or are you thinking about a pond?

Satsuma is near Mobile. I think I remember seeing the signs for Satsuma, LA on the way to Baton Rouge a few years ago.

I don't have a pond now, but I'm considering it!

That's right!!! I figured with your zone you had to be close to Mobile. I almost didn't have the pond put in. I had no experience with water gardening what so ever!!! I made so many mistakes right from the start. But things finally came together. Now I can't imagine life without it. I find it so peaceful in my hectic life to just sit and watch the fish for hours. While there are moments when something else goes wrong and it raises you blood pressure but most of the time it's a good medicine for high blood pressure.

Good luck with your endeavor. You are ahead of me already with your membership to DG there are so many knowledgeable people out there that are happy to answer any question. I've been doing it for years and there are still questions that I have to ask.

Jeri, you've inspired me to work harder with my place! The Rangoon, the Red Mandeville, and the Bromeliads are awsome! We share the same zones but I envy your soil. My soil is almost completely limestone and in some places it's solid rock. I've recently planted a few trees, so, hopefully, they'll help to break up that rock. That'll be years down the road, though. PrpleAster was right, you are very nice and gracious. I look forward to seeing what you do in the future.

Hello T.J.!! Thank you that was very kind of you to say!!

I have 2 GFs that Lasagna garden. Here is a link to it:

http://ourgardengang.tripod.com/lasagna_gardening.htm

They swear by it. Just layer everything out in the fall and next spring you have beautiful soil to plant in. No digging, turning or blasting in some cases.

Hope this helps.

Jeri, I'm still drooling over for gardens and I'm not finished looking at them. I just had to pop back to your thread to ask you about the Pride of Barbadus plant. I planted one from seeds this past spring. It's one of the slowest growing plants for me but it's not about 2' tall. Does yours over winter for you?
Love the birdhouse with the sedums (?) hens and chickens (?) I'm just guessing that's what's growing on the roof of the birdhouse. How cute!
