Hiya ..

I live in the country .. have well water .. the water is HARD .. I basically am able to 'keep up' the toilets .. as in they don't look too scaley .. BUT .. one of'em has build up on it .. inside the bowl .. I have used my usual toilet bowl cleanser which is SAni Flush .. it bubbles up and has always worked .. but .. now I find I am scrubbing way too much .. I used CLR .. it took SOME of the build up off .. but the stuff is very pricey!!
I did try bleach .. but want to stay away from that as I have a septic field .. SOS worked a lil bit ..

Any suggestions ??

Vinegar will dissolve hard water, I've never used it to clean my toilet so I don't know how much you'd need but that might be a good option for you. Or if there's stuck on stuff that needs to be really, really scrubbed, I've seen in a few places these pumice stones for scrubbing stains out of toilets. Never tried them so I don't know how well they work though.

I agree with ecrane - try vinegar - let it soak

What kind of vinegar can you use for the toilets? white, apple cider or both?

Thanks

I've used plain white vinegar to clean the mineral deposits that get in my coffee maker from hard water. Works really well when hot.

Wonder if you could drain out the water from the bowl and pour a gallon of hot vinegar into it and let it sit?

Do you have a septic tank ? I don't know if vinegar is ok for septics. I know it's good for killing a lot of germs...and sometimes that's not the best for septic systems.

If you have one, you might need to check with a septic professional first to make sure it won't cause problems there first.

But, hot vinegar really eats off hard water residue from inside coffee makers. You should see all the gunk I catch in the filter. Yuk !

I use denture tablets . Great for porcelain. I put 2 in the toilot itself and lift the tank lid? and put 2 back there once a week. This is just a weekly thing I do. It helps. I use saniflush also. Never tried vinegar but will.

how do you get the vinegar hot? Do you boil it, put it in the microwave? Does it STINK!? I have thought about the denture tabs, I should try it.
We were told by the people that make our toilet not to use the drop in things as it deteriotes the bushings or the rings or something like that. I sure wish I could use the bleach drop ins.

I have used pumice stone on the ring around the water line; it worked.
I'd use white vinegar, and not worry about the septic. One gal of vin to 1000 gallons of poo water? just a little acid, my humble opinion.

I purchased 'Iron Out' found in most hardware stores..a few drops and voila..nice and white toilet...I even at times when my whites turned completely yellow put a teaspoon or two and salvaged a lot of my whites...

The pumice stone and screen, which looks like a small patch of window screen takes of everything. I used them both with our cleaning business and at home.

Years ago I moved into a house that had a HORRIBLE looking toilet in the back...so bad the ring inside was black, thick and scaly and the front bathroom had been used by 4 men for years. Everything I tried...nothing removed the scaly build up and urine crystal chunks...I bought a pumice stone and it took it all off, made the toilets look new...no joke.

Another good cleaner to use with it is Bar Keepers Friend. You can find it at Walmart in the cleaning section, gold can like Ajax. Use the screen or pumice, get all the chunks off then sprinkle with Bar Keepers, get damp, let set, scrub, your porcelain will shine like crazy.

Bar Keeper's Friend is what my better half uses on a lot of the vintage cookware he sells. We get a lot of compliments on how clean the items are that he sends out.
