After removing 15 yr old sanitas paper in my hallway successfully, I thought was left with patches of glue residue only to discover that the original primer peeled off in patches leaving bare wallboard. There's too much left to scrap plus I'm afraid I'll destroy the sheetrock. How do I get the walls smooth again?Should I just re-wallpaper? I guess I need to prime first. What a mess!
For the areas that are left bare, either mix up joint compound or buy a small tub and using a putty knife, apply it over the bare areas fanning it out over the primed areas. Then just sand smooth. Prime and see if it all looks smooth, if not, reapply more joint compound, sand and re-prime those areas.
I live in a house built in 1896 and the PO had vinyl wallpaper in the foyer and going up the staircase into the alcove and down the hallway. When I removed the wallpaper, it pulled off primer. Plus I noticed that it was just the scratch coat of plaster and whoever put up the wallpaper, primed and had painted a blue 3" wide "line" to mark where one wallpaper ended and the other started. I've got the foyer, staircase and alcove done, but will work on the hallway this winter. It's not hard once you get the hang of it.
