this bug seems to show up here in the north after a rain in all sizes
this image is of one approx 1 inch long
does anybody know what it is ?

It's gotta be a firefly larva, but I can't find any pictures that look quite like that one. Around here in June they're everywhere, but I've only seen the larvae a couple times. Some of them are called Net Wing beetles. As kids we always called them lightning bugs

we are not supposed to have fireflys in Calif
but we do have glow worms
this one does not look like any of the picts i have found online so far of glow worms
but
i have learned it is a Pterotus obscuripennis a near relative of the firefly

Pterotus is a genus in the family of fireflies, Lampyridae, so it's a firefly alright. Is that your picture? You should put it in Bug Files!
