It's not a "wall" question...ceiling question.

I would like to get rid of cottage cheese on ceilings. Painted in egg shell so I don't know if this will make it harder or easier but is there a easy, less messy way to get it off or do I just wade on in and expect a big mess to clean up?

Couple things...first is if your house is older, there may be asbestos in the popcorn in which case you should definitely not tackle the job yourself (anything pre-1970's is very likely to have asbestos, and I believe throughout the 70's and maybe early 80's usage of asbestos was declining but was still a possibility). Second of all, if the popcorn has been painted over, that makes it next to impossible to remove. If there's no asbestos and the eggshell color you mention is the natural color of the popcorn and not paint, then you can tackle the project yourself, but it will be messy. Google "popcorn ceiling removal" or something like that and you'll come up with a bunch of websites that have instructions. Basically, you wet a section of ceiling with water, then you take a scraper and scrape the popcorn off. I would recommend covering up everything underneath with plastic first! If the popcorn's been painted over this approach won't work and I have no idea how you would remove it, although I'm sure the pro's would have some way of doing it.

I'm facing this in my bathroom remodel. I'm considering putting drywall right over the ceiling. Wouldn't that work?

Yes, Loon. Save yourself the asbestos exposure, and get a stronger, quieter ceiling to boot.

House built in 81 by us(our own two hands)but popcorn was blown on by someone else.

I have a feeling that I'm stuck w/ popcorn in livingroom since it's the only one I got around to re-painting in eggshell because I was tired of sweeping the cobwebs and dust off the ceiling (and having popcorn fall in my face). Eggshell paint has done a wonderful job on keeping down the sweeping job but I hate the popcorn.
