Those were 'Magnus' Coneflowers with 'Kobold' Liatris. Some of the Coneflowers were 'winding down' on the bloom, that's why they looked faded and paler.
High Country Gardens http://www.highcountrygardens.com/ have several different varieties of Liatris. One of my favorite is Liatris ligulistylus (which they offer). Here's a photo from last July showing a flower bloom of it with the Liatris 'Kobold' and 'Magnus' Coneflowers. The Butterflies love to perch and drink from it.
HCG also offers Liatris squarrosa, which I'm waiting for it to be delivered this week.
The Goldfinches love the seeds of the Liatris. Leave the seeds on the stems and watch them flock to eat.
