Hi everyone (gosh I've been absent from DG for so long I've missed all the new forums but glad to have found this one!)
We have a 2100 SF, 10 year old home in desperate need of cosmetic rehab. When we purchased we got "rock bottom" linoleum, carpet...etc. It was all we could afford. So now, keeping the same footprint of our living area's, we want to put in new hardwoods, carpet, tile and trimwork.
So the question is - HOW do I find a carpenter that does stairwells and most importantly - newel posts? I have not been able to find anyone (read: yellowpages or internet) that can do this work.
Do you have Angie's List in Seattle? That's a good place to look for contractors and you can read the reviews that people who've used them have written.
Thank-you, these are good leads, and the type of info I need. I've never thought about asking a builder, but that makes complete sense. And Darius there is an independent lumberyard within 20 miles of where I live. I've never embarked on any type of re-hab before and this is all new to me (us). But I will be the project manager. My husband is working 60+ hours a week these next few months (retail).
I would do it if I was there.
Like someone said find a homebuilder. Look for one that builds high end houses, they would put that sort of things in new houses & would know the best people for the job.

If you see signs of companies doing work in your neighborhood, ask your neighbors what they think of the job. It always helps to talk to folks for whom the contractor/construction worker has worked. Get as many testimonials as you can and make sure the folks aren't related to the worker! ☺
