I was thinking I had posted these images on DG at some point, but someone asked to see them and when I did a searched I was unable to find them. I guess I must have just put up a link to the ones I have on my personal site? Anyway . . . here they are.

After experimenting with watercolor paints for a while, I decided to give acrylics a try. The entire process is completely different and almost reverse from what I was used to, so it was back to square one for me. I knew that acrylics offer a lot more flexibility and are a lot more forgiving than watercolor, but I had never worked with them and was most surprised at how FAST they actually dry.

I think they a really nice medium and I've had fun working with them. My first two attempts (On Guard & Young Studs) were kept pretty basic and simple and went pretty fast, about 15-20 hours each, and allowed me to learn some basic techniques with the new medium. I had an idea for this series that I felt would be best with acrylics. I wanted to work a dual theme into the paintings. A semi-hidden image in the clouds to compliment the foreground image.

The next one, Against The Wind, took about a month to complete. I wanted to try to teach myself more about layering / glazing the colors that I had read a little about. I spent more time "playing" and experimenting with these techniques than I did actually trying to complete the painting. By the time I started this one, I decided to elaborate more on the sky image and bring it more to the forefront of the painting. It went through several phases in just the sky part alone and I probably *over worked it* and may should have left well enough alone, but it's all good when you're learning :)

The next one, Rollin Thunder went a little faster, but not a lot, maybe two weeks in all. I wanted to stay with the "Sky/Cloud Image" scheme, but also wanted to get closer and more details in the foreground horses. By the time I finished this piece, I was fairly comfortable with my "new" medium.

This image is a close-up of part of the last one - I'll add a full view of each one.

Beautiful, GD. It's obvious you know horses. You have to know a subject pretty well before you can paint it with as much realism as you do. I actually can't believe how lovely they are.

Hi, GD_Rankin
Today was my first chance to visit your thread.
I like your work very much.
I CAN NOT DRAW a HORSE.
Not even to save my own life.
You have it down pat.
I admire that.
Great Work.

Thanks ya'll . . . I wouldn't say I have them *down pat* but I did learn a good deal with this series. I think I'm still more comfortable with watercolor and even though they are not as forgiving, I tend to have more confidence with them than I do with acrylic at this stage.

It's all fun though and that's what counts :)

Hi,
I just looked at this today. Against the wind is my favorite. I admire the way you studied your "new medium" and the way you work with it. Acrylics so often have a flat look and yours definitely do not.

GD - LOVE the series! I'm glad you've ventured into acrylics. I find the versatility and fast drying time them one of my favorite mediums. I don't know if I'm opening a can of worms here but have you considered oil? I have found that I'm satisfied with acrylics almost all the time except when it comes to horses. There is something about oils that add a new dimension to horses, mainly with the darker colors. (bays, blacks). You are so talented in catching movement you might enjoy working in this medium.

I have horse babies of course! I have a 5 yr clyd./tb cross and a welsh/cobb cross. We are building a new house and a painting of my babies would make a great addition!! I do have 3 two legged babies too - all girls 7months, 3 and 6. You can paint them too if you felt so inspired. LOL! Here is one of the welsh cross with my 3 year old (not the best picute).

Amy . . . Thanks for the kind words :) Yes I've given some thought to Oils, but haven't gotten around to try'n them yet. I've been told that I should many times. Hopefully I'll get around to trying them sooner rather than later :)

Ahhh ok Aspen . . . I thought that's what you meant, but I wasn't sure. Great photos and they're all inspirational for sure and yeah I'd be open to doing a painting for your new house :) No problem . . . not hi-jack'n anything here. Just show'n these because of the convo/interest from over on the Equine board. Glad you came over and had a look. Thanks for share'n your photos . . . lovely horses and girls :)
