Hi, I am new to hard wood flooring. What method is best used to clean hard wood floors? Upon my first attempt, I used your standard brand cleaner along with a clean mop and bucket. It left streaks and water marks. Am I using too much cleaner? My mother is on her way over for the holidays and ...well...you know the rest of the story.
Thanks for your replie(s).
The best thing unless the floors are really dirty is just a damp mop run over the surface, this will pick up dust, small bits of dirt, etc. If they're really dirty, then your cleaner (assuming it says on the bottle that it's safe to use on wood--some of them aren't!) should be fine, but you will probably have to rinse afterwards. I don't know if you did that the first time or not, but most dilutable floor cleaners need to be rinsed afterwards if you want your floor to look shiny.
I have read a vinegar solution like 1/2 to 1 cup vinegar to 1 gall water using a well rung out mop. Then buff w/ dry soft towel. I have also read, from Queen of Clean I think, using a quart of strong tea and a rag dipped in that and rung out does not need rinsing. I do a weak solution w/ vinegar about 1 every 6 months making sure very little moisture is on the floor and dry with a towel.
