| Well I KNEW DG would have a painting forum! Dave's thought of everything. I got an awesome easel and paints, etc. for Christmas, so 'm getting back to painting and have borrowed my mom's art tapes of Helen Van Wyk and Gary & Kathwren Jenkins. Good stuff! I want much more, I don't care if it's just taped off the TV. Neither one has much to offer for sale.
What/who do you recommend? Our PBS station carries NO art shows!!!!!!!

| Ladyborg, I'm not a painter, nor any kind of artist, but I suspect you should first try your own imagination and see what comes out. I know in my son's case, he never followed anyone else's style. He found he had one of his own.
This forum is relatively new. It was promoted mostly by GD Rankin. So glad you found it! Now, how soon can we see some of your artwork???
(Why do most of the artistic types seem to be in Texas??) |

| Nap, Texas is just one of those unique states. Missouri is known for its rednecks that can tell when a Yankee comes to town. LOL |

| Start sketching and see where you go. When you find the sketch you like paint it. Or find a photo or mag. picture to copy. It will lead to other places, those in your minds eye.

| Ladyborg, I suggest you look into local art organizations. They usually offer classes of all sorts. Take any and all that you can. I find it's best to try different teachers - a good one will encourage you to find and develop your own style instead of copying them. Work that you really admire ask the artist about their technique, approach, ect (most artists LOVE to talk about their work) If you can't find any local art orgs or clubs go to the galleries: they know where the artists are and who teaches.
Practice, practice, practice and remember - some of the best work comes out of the worst mistakes!
Good luck and have fun,

| Looks like you've come to the right place. Everyone has offered about all the suggestions I could think of and hopefully that'll get you off to a good start anyway.
When I first started fool'n around with watercolors . . . I just more or less dootled with them for a bit on some scratch paper - to get a feel for the (new to me) medium. Then I dreamed up something pretty simple and sketched it out and tried my hand at adding color. After a few of those I felt more comfortable and started looking for some photos to paint from. Lots of experimenting and just trial and error in general, but it was all good and all fun along the way.
That's kind of how a few more people I've met got started too, but there's so many options. Just feel around and find something that's comfortable for you and fits your schedule and you'll do fine. :)
Here's a link that may help . . . http://www.wetcanvas.com
Wet Canvas is the site, lots of info there on all sorts of mediums.
Good luck and be sure to share some of your work with us in the future :)

| That seems to summarize the way most people get into the media they work with be it paint, stone or whatever you find is yours. Then in a few years that may change. I was a fiber artist until I found what clay could d, now I sculpt in clay. While getting my BFA I hated clay, I think it was the person teaching it rather than the clay. I wonder if I will stay with it or find something else? |

| I enjoyed seeing all the creative paintings. I used to paint, then moved to this place and all my energy went to gardening. Now I'm so much older and haven't tried to paint for 15 years, think all my tubes of paint have probably dried up. So guess I better stick to gardening.

| I consider my flowerbeds a painting in themselves! It's all about putting the right colors in the right places and making sure clashing colors don't bloom at the same time, etc. etc. It's a constant painting that is always evolving. God's perfect art!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
