Folks, I have no idea what this is. My wife bought it somehwere a few years ago, here in north Florida. As I recall, it was blooming at the time (probably the reason she bought it). Once I got my hands on it, I re-potted it to a larger pot. And because it seemed to be somewhat fragile, I grew it out near the garden in partial shade. It grew pretty well, and even multiplied over the last 3 seasons, but I never saw any flower stalks on it.
This last May-June I finally unpotted the bulbs, washed off all the dirt, and let them cure for 2-3 weeks in the house. After that, I put the bulbs in a large gallon sized zip lock, along with moist cedar mulch and put it in the vegetable crisper in the fridge.
The bulbs sat in the fridge for 6 months until I checked on them. Around the middle of November I decided enough was enough. I pulled them out of the fridge and found that the bulbs were beginning to sprout, and they had new white roots that were 1-2 inches long.
So, I re-potted the bulbs in a mixture of 50% fluffy potting soil and 50% composted cow manure. I also added a bit of "four month" Osmocote BB's to the mixture.
Now, here it is January 1st and I see one flower stalk. The other 2 bulbs I put in this pot are not doing very well. I'm guessing that the 2 that are not doing well have suffered because those bulbs were planted so deep that the soil covered the crown of the bulbs.
here are my questions. -- What the heck is it? And, should the bulbs be planted with the top 1/2 inch or so of the bulb be above the soil line?
I should mention that I've done a great job of growing the bulbs. Over the past 3 seasons the first bulb has multiplied to 6 good sized bulbs, and there are 2 or three baby bulbs growing along the sides of the parents. The parent bulbs are pretty good sized, as well. In fact, the 3 bulbs that are doing best are growing in a very crowded pot. All the bulbs are at least half as big as a tennis ball.
I'd appreciate a green-thumber tell me what I've got and and how best to deal with it. Thanks.
