| I've posted this elsewhere, but it was suggested that I pop over her and show ya'll what I was working on.
This is a fabric panel that will eventually be a wall hanging...I've dyed the background and hand painted the animals.
It's not complete...I need one more bovine of some sort in the upper right, and there will be a couple of red handprints also.
This is my take on a prehistoric cave painting similar to what can be seen in the french caves like Lascaux. I will bind it in a rough burlap fabric that has been frayed and cut in assymetrical bands. Bone beads will be hung from black cords and there will be some quilting to define the rock striations...but I wouldn't call this a quilt.
The background fabric was actually an accident...the result of using my 'brush water' that was left over from another project. You wet your fabric and fold and scrunch it, then put the dye on it...the round circles are the imprints left by scattering pebbles across it. If left in the sun, you get a sillouhette burned under anything placed on the wet dye. When I unfolded it...it just screamed cave painting, so i heat set the fabric and overdyed what was there to make it look like the walls of a french cave...the animals were painted later. | Your accident sure gave you a wonderful idea. I can't wait to see it done. Would you post progression photos at each stage please?

| I'm going for a primitive feel on the whole piece. I think the cave paintings are some of the most lovely art in existence and have admired them for years. I wasn't really keen on the little guys with spears and stabbed animals gracing my living room wall, so I'm doing just the animals...and the handprints.
These handprints will be silhouettes...the prehistoric artists put the dye or paint in their mouths and blew it onto the walls, like an airbrush. This adds to the mystical feel, as the compounds that they used were usually quite toxic and they could die from ingesting some of them.
I'll post updates as I get other portions done for sure... |

| Melody, it's a wonderful thing when the medium inspires the art!! I could sit in the middle of a pile of handpainted fabric and be happy all day. this is absolutely beautiful. pure art :0) I will be looking forward to seeing more |

| Thanks ya'll...I'm really enjoying this piece. It's been a dream to work on. Some stuff just doesn't have the inspiration or 'spark' that I'd want, but this is one of those that I'm never tired of looking at either.
I'm in the middle of a home remodel and it's having to wait for a bit before finishing...as well as it's 'parent'...the one that gave me the brush water originally.
I'll post it later today. It's a gray/lavender autumn sky with leaves swirling over it. |

| Well, I'm finally getting around to posting the finished piece...over a year later.
It is about 24" wide x 36" long
It is in my stairway for the time being, but Sharran wants to share 'custody' of it, so there will probably be a sister piece in the works. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| 'Scuse me Mel, but how long is it before I regain custody???
Y'all, that piece hung in the little community gallery we have here for about a year, off and on. I got a little attached to it.
You cannot believe the amazing textiles that Mel comes up with. I am so glad she lives so close to me.
Thanks Melody,
Love you!! |

| Hi melody, your cave artwork really caught my eye. It's gorgeous! You really did capture the vision of a cave with the colors. It reminds me of the petroglyphs I saw in Vernal, Utah...here's a pic. Click the image for an enlarged view.
