We have only recently started using Salvage Materials and have saved a TON!
Here's a link to some across the USA.

Henry, I've been trying to find places nearby where I could get scrap wood and old bricks. This link is great, but it looks like they take scrap as donations, not give it away... How do I find places that give it away?

Check w/ your local dump, scrapyards or contractors in your area.
They may have some ideas for you.

Cruise neighborhoods with new construction. Speak with the site foreman and see what you can have.

I've harvested many boards and other construction materials that are considered scrap. Builder has to pay to haul it away or burn and haul away the remainder.

Fencing contractors are another source of good material. Old cedar fence boards, and cut-off new 2x lumber that they have as scrap can be had for asking.

Also many fence yards have wood fence that has set out and weathered.
You can often get it cheaply and if you're doing a repair...match old wood you already have up.

I worked in Chainlink Fence for years.
We sold used fence, posts and toprail we had taken down for next to nothing.
A little paint and ...

We have been hitting Building Values here in Cincinnati pretty hard.
The are a branch of the March of Dimes.
They accept donations and have their own 'gentle deconstruction crew'.
All the doors and cabinets are solid wood not pressboard.
All their cabinet doors are 5 dollars and solid wood..

So far... For the Kitchen @40 bucks each, maple corner base and corner wall cabinets, @ 20 bucks two over counter cabinets and 4 cabinet doors.
For the Bathroom... an absolutely flawless vintage Crane Sink circa 1930 for 10 bucks (ebay value around 300)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/rnranimals/361091855/in/set-173...

and all the cabinet doors, ten 2' x 2' sheets of vintage subway tile.
For the Living room and kitchen 136' of 5 1/4" Aspen Crown Molding at 1 buck a foot.
2 sets of like new Plantation Shutters 39 wide by 59" tall... 4 8' tall louvered doors... the list goes on...
