We recycle or re-use just about everything. Nearly all of my raised beds are enclosed with lumber that I either found or was given to me. Last Summer I agreed to tear down the next door neighbor's old garage that had been standing since 1911 in exchange for all the wood. I am saving all the rough lumber 2 X 6's to make new raised beds this year. We heat our home with a wood stove, so the wood I don't use in the garden is being used for fuel.
I keep an eye out for empty plastic detergent bottles and cut strips out of them for plant markers. I simply label them with a permanent marker. They are re-usable year after year.
Every other year or so, I scrounge the local river bank for willow and cottonwood poles to make tipis for my pole beans
One restaurant I sell to saves their coffee grounds for me.
I'll occasionally get the produce trimmings from the local supermarket and I incorporate them into my compost piles.
Being a scavenger is like treasure hunting to me, and I'd do it even if it didn't make economic sense!
