| In order to jump start this forum a little I've decided to start a new thread. How about everyone posting their new work, started and completed in the New Year. I'd be interested to see what 2007 has brought so far.
The one I've posted is an abstract in acrylic with a blended fibers medium for texture. I have three new ones that have been started in the new year but this is the first one completed for 2007.
Let's see what everyone else have done!

| oooh, very nice Amy. I'm like zen, have WIP but nothing completed yet. Am currently experimenting with gelatin plate printmaking. The final prints will be included in an accordian book for an art swap.

| Thanks! I know it needs work... and seeing it on the puter kind of makes me laugh. I need to develop my values better. Plus I would love to be more impressionistic instead of detail oriented... That will be the tough obstacle & critique for me. |

| I like the color combinations, although the first change I would make is in the yellows. They are seperate from the other color areas. They should blend in. |

| zen...lol they are leaves, on the rocks... Now they could use shadows underneath... Is that what you mean? or do you actually mean to be impressionistic, they stand out too much. |

| I mean more impressionistic they stand out too much. The eye doesn't move around it gets "stuck" on the leaves. |

| I get that... Thank you... I am having trouble getting different values? from the palette to the paper, They don't look different enough. I think just a practice of one color picture is in my future. just to get more of the feel. & to see what they do. But I think mixing the bright colors turn out pretty good. (Since I am learning from books.) |

| cach,
What size is that piece you posted at the beginning of this thread? The computer is so deceptive when it comes to size. Reminds me of the Andre Maulraux book " The Voices Of Silence", particularly the first section, Museum Without Walls-how our perception of art changed as the art was placed in a museum setting-and further through reproductions. I'd like to see a few more to get a better sense of your work. It feels like it should be a very large piece. I also work in a more "abstract-ed" style.
southO,
Nice flow and edges(defining the water) to your watercolor. The leaves make the stream look small, or the stream makes the leaves look very large. Keep going with the watercolor you have a good feel for it.

| sOhio, If you start with the lightest and go to the darkest by adding pigment it is easier than the reverse. If you wanted to blend the leaves into the background you could do it this way. Going from the gray to yellow start with the light grey/white and add a small bit of yellow to it, working your way to no grey and more yellow pigment. thus more of the impressionist view point.
All this being said, I always told my students it is best to perfect the realistic before you try to abstract. That being said, I don't always do that myself.
I am a sculptor mainly of women and not necessarily realistic, but once a week I draw realistically from a model. |

| sem - I was stuck on the leaves, too, Maple/poplar vs. What? Slippery elm? lol I did name this rivulet ... so it is just a cascade over rock Now when does this happen in nature?
Zen - I have seen your sculptures they are very moving. To be able to get that kind of feeling in art is awesome,
I understand one can't be abstract if you can't put the object on paper. It just seems like so little time. I will take your advice on the blending of the colors. I left the leaf spaces white & came back with yellow & kept toning down with browns.
Today, I am trying to tone down colors using anything but black & brown... This has been fun.

I’ve been watching all these comments with interest .
I`ll be interested in which way the piece takes you next .
My personal thought would be ,
Experiment on another page before you muddy the waters , so to speak.
You can ruin WC by over working to many times . my 2c worth . |

| Semper - The painting is 24 x 36. It's the only abstract I have right now to post. The abstracts tend to take me longer to produce than all other paintings, and I find that alot of thought has to go into one before putting it to canvas.
SouthernO - Looks like a great start to me. Everyone here seems to have given you good advice, the only thing I can add is to keep painting!
