'Extra' adorable Goldfinch getting sunflower seeds! I love the feathers all ruffled up on the sides! Looks to be a female. Would have liked to gotten a pic from the back to see how she looked with those ruffled feathers.

I love the Goldfinches! We have them here year round and love to see the 'young' ones late Summer/Fall. Song is so sweet and cheery!

Your goldfinches have far more color this time of the year than mine do - great shots! Love the ruffled feathers on the first one.

Thanks! When I took the photo, I didn't realize the ruffled feathers until I 'trimmed' it. It is cute!

During the summer months, I enjoy taking photos of them while they are feasting on ripening thistles. Here is a photo taken this past summer while in his brilliant color.

Oh, I miss my finches. We enjoyed them so much over the summer. Right outside our great room window. They'll come to the feeder when we're in the pool, too. And hear them sing! No new pics, but here's one from last summer.

Murmur, regarding your comment, it is ironic but just last week I received a request from a professional artist (oil painter) if she could get a high resolution image to paint from to illustrate her book. I did accommodate her request. On the day that I took that photo, the Goldfinches were too busy with the thistle to pay alot of attention to me. Actually, I like this photo as much if not more than the earlier one that I posted. Note the thistles falling from his mouth.

I'm like Murmur in Washington, our goldfinches just don't have the color of the Eastern variety. I was visiting my Mother in Ohio in June and watching her feed her glorious goldfinches, so I brought back to California a 'sock' feeder. I'm attracting the local flock but they're not as colorful. In fact, I'm not sure if our locals aren't the "Lesser Goldfinch." Can anyone help me make the proper identification? What should I look for?.
