That is so cute. I love goldfinches too. They fly like they are on a roller coaster. Sometimes I see them in small flocks when we have really cold weather.

Excellent photo of the American Goldfinch. I only get a few around my feeder. Most of my Goldfinch photos are taken out in the fields usually among thistle plants.

I buy thistle bags for mine. They cling to the sacks and pick the seeds thru. Cardinals are still my favorite backyard bird to watch. They look so pretty in a snow covered tree.

The one thing I don't like about most Thistle feeders is that the rain gets in and ruins the seeds at the bottom. Most of the feeders do not open from the bottom so their very difficult to get out. I have found one that does open from the bottom but its a little expensive so I'm saving my pennies. As soon as I buy it I'll post a pic and try to get some info for all about it.

My thistle feeder is open for business but very few takers so far. Not sure why. May need to re-locate it. All I've seen the past few days are sparrows. I think this latest supply of seed I got is too heavy on the millet seed. No takers for the suet, either. Ah well. I did spot this Mock. waiting for all the sparrows to clear off!

Hey, I just got here and wowie kazowie! All you guy's pics are aboslutly terrific! I am delighted and impressed as all get out! Seriously!!!! great stuff!

Been working on a rather time consumming project, attempting to get some bird pics in my site and getting a site extension for the one I have.. It will be Texas Butterflies & Wildlife. Nothing up yet on that url. All the bird pics and wildlife blog will be channeled to
http:// texasbfandwildlife.org, I put a space so no one would accidentally click on it. When it is ready I will let you all know. What I have up so far is on [HYPERLINK@theletteroflove.com]

An idea occured to me today.. Some birds just pass through looking for berries etc. on trees, and they leave after they have a good look around. So this is what I did to the tree right outside my little window. I will watch it tomorrow to see what happens, at the very least Mockingbird will probably have a few, lol. Tomorrow I will have better light too..

You are lucky to have hummers late in the year. We have to pull our feeders in when cold weather starts because they will freeze and crack. I forgot to empty two rain gauges in this last freeze and they cracked.

Loving everyone's photos!

Flygirl: I had a thistle feeder exactly like yours; the goldfinches loved it. The squirrels destroyed it by chewing around the holes til they were big enough for them to get the seeds! Had to get a wire mesh one to replace it.

Mary: Those nuthatches do not like to oblige for photos do they!? We have white-breasted and brown-headed but they've been keeping way up on the pine tree trunks recently. Can't get 'em in near enough to photograph.

Sheila: I love wrens! We have many here. They stay down in the azaleas most of the time. I can hear one calling right now. Oh- and that kinglet is sooo cute.
Aguane: Our mockingbirds hang out in the tree over the feeder but - so far - don't seem to want to partake. They nest in the holly bushes. Going to try an experiment today and will post a photo if it works. :)

Thanks! Yes, we really enjoy the hummers! We all see to have quite afew right now. Guess they migrate from afar. Though its been usually cold, freezing here for the last week +. You'd think they'd go on to Mexico.

The Mockingbirds hang out in the pyracantha and eat the berries. They seem to just guard the seed. Strange. Difficult for me to get a pic of them, for some reason.

edited: So many people wonder about those little feet on the thorns. Apparently these Cardinal prefer hanging out in Organ Pipe. This guy is there everyday. I've only seen one. I think. Never two at one time, anyway.

Great Warbler and Hummie pics you Debin and aguane!!

Funny, I put this hummie feeder out there the other day with a couple ounces of nectar just to see if anyone would come to it. Hearing that some people have to *thaw* their nectar every morning in some places, I thought this area might not be so different.
I left off the top of it so there is a little pool around the bottom instead of the holes that take a long beak to access.
Warbler likes to take a little sip it seems... LOL!

Nice effects Debin! She's purdy!

Actually I'm not surprised.. the water is made with special hummie sugar. Warbler doesn't drink from the other birds water either, they get a lot of water in the mealies and buggies they eat, and she sure likes this.

Hi--I'm new to this forum and I've been enjoying everyone's pictures immensely! Thought I would share just a few of mine--this is our basic setup. Our family is new to feeding birds, but the birds we've had at our feeders include chickadees, white-breasted nuthatches, titmice, goldfinches, house finches, downy woodpecker (I think), red-bellied woodpecker, blue jays, cardinals, various sparrows and juncos. I'm looking forward to the spring to see what will come our way then.

Here's our window-mounted feeder--we usually refer to it as "Dunkin' Donuts" and when we see the birds at it in the morning one of us usually mentions that the "drive-thru" is open. :)

Oh and Debinsc, no snow here anymore. That was taken a couple weeks ago.

edited to ask...Did anyone have an idea as to the ID on the bird I posted back a few? (Between the doves and kinglet)

"Niere, is that a slinky with peanuts?????"

Sheila--LOL! It DOES look like one, doesn't it!? I'm afraid I can't take any sort of creative credit for that--I picked that up at the local wild bird chain store. I don't know if they carry them all the time, but I know they had them out before the holidays in red and green and I think they are supposed to resemble a wreath. It is essentially a coated slinky with hooks on both ends that fasten to a main anchor that you hang from your hook, branch or what have you. I agree--they are pretty cool looking :D and the blue jays, woodpeckers and even the titmice are able to pull the peanuts out fairly easily.

Sorry I can't help with the bird id--I'm drawing a total blank with it. Could it be some kind of finch??

Thanks for the welcome pelletory! :D

As always, I am really enjoying all of these feeder pictures. I also especially enjoy seeing the warbler ones posted as I am very unfamiliar with warblers (except for the yellow rumped). If I saw one at the feeder I would probably chalk it off as something "sparrowy" or "finchy" lol. Having a camera certainly helps with identification since you can crop and blow the photo up. Thanks again for posting everybody.

Here are a few from my house. I put a new feeder up closer to my front picture window and filled it with irresistable goodies for the fruit and nut lovers. :-)

Here are a few of a mockingbird. This was the first bird to glom on to the feeder. Here its watching me, a bit apprehensive but not wanting to leave and give up this treasure trove lol.

Lily! What a cool ice formation! The pics of mockingbird , wren, finch, and titmouse are superb!

More great pics Debin! I love those!

Weclome aboard Niere! I like how your feeders are by the window, you have some very cool gadgets!

Stepping out to take Bennie to school yesterday I heard this very familiar igh pitch shrilling sound (sounds kinda like a dog whining). I have been listening to the sounds of certain birds over and over so that I would quickly recognize them and know what to look for. Well there they were, a small flock of Cedar Waxwings in the neighbors tree directly across the street>> I am waiting to see if they will come in closer and take the dried cherries from my tree in back by my window..
Here is the sound> [HYPERLINK@www.birds.cornell.edu]

Oh I love cedar waxwings!! And I love that sound they make - its not like any other bird. I think of it as a squeeky wheel sound. They always fly around here in flocks even during nesting time. But they are hard to get good pictures of because they stay up in the trees. Great photos debnes!!

Hi Teresa - I took mine through my living room wiindow. The last warm spell we had I went out and washed my windows and that really helped lol. Also I have changed my camera setting (thanks to Pell) to the "action" setting. And I have also switched my camera to the setting where it will take a seies of fast shots for as long as I hold the button down. It eats up a lot of the card but who cares - I just erase what I don't want. My chances of getting a good shot are a lot better that way. (it was either Trois or linthicum who taught me that one :-> ) I have learned so much on this forum!! Thanks y'all!!!

Yeah the page i posted up there has more info on CWW and it says they are one of few kinds of birds that can live solely on fruit, and they digest the seeds instead of regurgitating them like many other birds do. That means they are serious fruit tree propagators. How cool is that?

Would be neat to have them around long enough to plant one here,, :-).

When there was a Ligustrum between me and the neighbor before it started creating problems and was cut down. The CWWs used to eat those and then roost in the pecan trees above our walkway. They do leave a mess, purple sploches everywhere. LOL!! It is worth it to see them, such a beautiful bird. They come down to a birdbath or stream to drink just like they eat; ALL together!! Safety in numbers I guess. I don't think a cat would approach the mass of squealing birds!

Welcome to the Bird Watching forum, pocomoke. I look forward to seeing your photos since you are located in great area for a variation of birdlife. In November, I stayed in the Pocomoke City Holiday Inn, as my wife and I visited both Chincoteague and Assateague. Unfortunately, the weather (rain) wasn't ideal for bird photography. I do visit Blackwater every opportunity I get. You might periodically visit the following link which provides information on what others are seeing in Maryland.

lilyfantn I like to think I know a lot of common birds in our area of N.W. Missouri but those warblers I'm not very good at identifying. Just love your Yellow Rumped Warbler picture. I gave my father-in-law a couple of wren houses for Christmas and hope some wrens nest in them. I have 3 or 4 wren houses around our house and they sing all summer long. I see them catching insects all summer for themselves and their families but wonder if they would respond to a food at a feeder?
