Unfortunately I am unable to have a vented hood over the range I use most. The current one is not doing the job. The cupboard above is getting ruined from oil fumes. All I seem to be able to locate is "downdraft" type ones. I need something that will do a good job without venting and maybe have removable filters that would go in the dishwasher for cleaning.

Thanks, guys!

Several brands of vent hoods have a filter and return the air to the room. Check with any kitchen appliance dealers near you. I think I've seen them in the Big-Box stores, too.

A couple of houses we have lived in, had them. DW and I hated them, and replaced with downdraft when we replaced the range tops.

But if you cannot vent, then that is the only choice. Clean the filter often to remove the odor and grease buildup.

Sadly my venthood is only 6" high; I think the kind you are talking about are more like 14". I think I will have to re-think about tearing out the cupboard above to accomodate something to get the job done. Originally it WAS vented but shared the same vent as the dryer; when we tore into it, what a mess inside that pipe; I didn't think it was safe so we blocked of the stove vent part of it. That vent goes through between the ceiling and the floor above so we are kind of stuck.

Arlene,
The one we got in our kitchen is a Nautilus. We got it at Menards. It is around 6 inches high. Works great, too.
All it needs is electricity.
Good Luck,
Bernie

Hey Bernie,

What is there in the way of filter for the grease? Something that goes in the Dishwasher? I'll go look up Nautilis just in case you don't see this.

That is the style I was referring to.

As tall as I am it blows right in my face. That was our main complaint.

The extruded mesh filter is dishwasher acceptable, but you may still have some water retained in the channels when you remove it from a wash cycle.

Allure by Broan; purchased at Menards in Fort Dodge. It has a sensor that makes it come on automatically when it gets extremely hot over the stove. 3 positions on the halogen lights (I can now see what I am cooking!) and 3 fan speeds. Filters come out and go in the dishwasher.

Thanks for all the input!
