Is there a "rule of thumb" for spacing shrubs for a hedge?

What type of shrubs are you planning on planting? Some get bushier than others, therefore need to be planted farther apart to keep them from crowding each other out. If you know what type you are wanting to plant, it would help to answer your question more accurately.

Make sure whatever shrubs you use can be grown as a hedge. For example, junipers will brown out where they touch, and are intended to stand on their own. Privet,(Ligustrum) are intended to be hedge plants and can be shaped easily. You need to let us know what plants you are thinking of using.
