I have some curtains in need of a bath. (never washed) The curtains still have the "sizing" in them and have a shape. Without spraying them with starch & ironing them, is there any other way to improve their looks? I seem to remember (about 40 years ago or so) that there was a product that you could use in the wash water that would "duplicate" the stiff look. What would you do to solve this problem?

women around here in old houses with huge tall (8 to 10 ft to 12 ft) windows, wash their "sheers" and add cornstarch to the rinse water then hang the curtains wet. Finger press to get them smooth. Starch can attract weevels. you can get the same effect by using spray sizing, which comes in different degrees of stiffness. As curator of an old house museum, we were taught never to iron old fabrics. Instead they are smoothed over a linen or canvas covered surface to dry. The result is quite stiff.
