| I love that nuthatch Deb! (I have never seen a brown headed one) They don't come to my feeders very often but I do see then clambering all over the huge maples in the yard. I think the maples must be starting to run with sap as the sapsucker has just started showing up again. Gee, it just occured to me why the sapsucker has that name! |

He probably got the one without the shell in the front yard. Here he is after arriving with his peanut (looking for the exchange depart... "I got this for Christmas and its not the right size!")

| I know a lot of you are plagued with squirrels who empty your feeders and won't think this is cute, but here are some pics of one of the few squirrels that I get. This one was fascinated with the camera and me on the other side of the window. He (I have no idea actually if it is a male or a female) kept trying to find a way in. I put my finger on the window pane and he tried to sniff it through the glass and made little clacking noises with his paws on the glass. Here are some pics of him.

| What a cutie! I like the squirrels just fine, except when they dig my bulbs.
Last year we had 3 ground squirrels, and DH took a particular liking to them. He's not to fond of birds, as a big tom turkey got him pretty good when he was a toddler.
My SIL made some squirrel feeders for DH, and we've both enjoyed watching them. But we have a switch on the feeder raiding! I have birds (scrub jays and fox sparrows) that actually get into the jar to get seed! I saw one of the jays checking it out for several days before it worked up the courage, but now it's a regular thing.
A squirrel was on the bird feeder a couple days ago, so they're showing up again. Hope I don't have a fight over the squirrel feeders, LOL |

Edited to add: Tigerlily: I feel your pain about squirrels digging bulbs. I had to give up tulips altogether!

Now I'm wondering if there is some kind of plastic film or something that I can tape on the window around where the camera is that will allow me to see out but they can't see in. | Sheila: I definitely need to find a spot away from the tree. First warmer day that I can get the materials, I'm going to make a 4X4 post set-up. I'll leave something in the tree for the squirrels but all the bird stuff is going to move. This morning I caught a squirrel having a nice meal of apples that I thought would be hard for him to get to. Silly me. :)
Birds have been elusive this morning. The muscovy ducks visit every day, but today they brought a pal (and his girlfriend - not pictured). If those giant Chinese geese start showing up, I'm in trouble.

Hi Deb! I had the camera set on fast action setting which is represented by an athlete icon on my dial. (does that make sense?) As is DebinSC's photos! You gals are great with the photographic eye! You are both catching some great shots!! Actually, everyone who has posted photos are such a joy to see! Thanks to all for posting so many great bird and squirrel shots!
It is warm here, so I am only getting the resident birds. I have several Blue Jays that frequent my feeders. Today I was out working in the yard and the Blue Jay was squawking at me! He was fussing and scolding me very loudly. He finally just flew to the feeder to grab the peanuts. And the cardinals followed right after him. The female cardinal was more interested in watching me than eating. She was really curious to see what I was doing. And then the squirrels got into the act following me around the yard from a safe distance. It seems these birds and rodents follow each other around from yard to yard in my neigborhood. Where one goes, the rest will follow. LOL! |

| Great photos everyone!
I really like the Downy WPs. I had them last year and the year before but haven't seen any this year.
The Wrens are so cute, I know we have them here, I see them in the summer but never in the winter, I don't know where they are, my book says they're supposed to be here year round.
Lily - the nuthatches as almost as fast as the chickadees, they'll linger for a while on the suet but they hit the seed feeders and are gone!
I'm having a problem with Mr. Mockingbird today. I finally bought him some apples and oranges yesterday, to go with the peanut butter concoction that he's been eating. This morning he was being nice but this afternoon, he's guarding all 9 feeders (only 1 has fruit) do you all suppose he'll give up after a while or should I move "his" feeder to a different location. He's running off anything that tries to feed, Cardinals, Finches, Titmice another Mock etc... He'll either perch on "his" feeder or in the nearby red buds and fly at anything that comes around.

It's pretty cold today and cloudy too, maybe 30, I don't know if they'd be getting ready to nest this early, would they?? I need to study up some on the various birds habits instead of just taking pictures :-) |

| What treat Tigerlily!! Thanks so much for sharing that with us! How exicting that must have been. Maybe it will take up residence at your house.
Hi bluegrassmom! How nice that your son built a wren house! I'm sure he will be watching it eagerly this summer. Wrens do like to build nests in houses. It sometimes takes more than a season to get a bird in a house though. Sometimes birds have used a house I put out right away and sometimes it has taken years. I have no idea why. Wrens like to nest in the strangest places besides houses too. For two years we had a wren sneak in through a narrow vent in our janitor's room at the school I work in and build a nest between bottles of cleaning fluids. They finally replaced the vent and we don't get them anymore. I sure hope you house does get occupants this year!
Wow, beautiful hawk Deb!

Wren's will build lots of rare places. One was in a trailer hitch at my Aunt's once. Then my sister had one build in a hanging basket. We were watching and taking pictures a couple weeks ago and this Wren though our BBQ might have a vacancy sign! Click the image for an enlarged view.

| We've also had wrens build nests in odd spots. Last season they came through a hold in the screen on our back porch and built a nest between a bag of orchid chips and a watering can on a shelf. Everytime I'd walk onto the porch, which was really hard to avoid doing, she would scold me terribly! Finally when mom was out, I hung a little cloth up in front of the shelf so they'd have privacy, and they seemed to be quite happy after that.
We also had house finches nest in our hanging boston ferns on our front porch.
We have several bird houses on our lot, but I've yet to see a bird use one. :) Maybe this year.
Sheila: I would bet that wren is scouting for a nesting spot.
Tiger: Thanks for the new junco. I had not even heard of that one!

ALL .. are some wonderful shots of our feathered & furry (squirrel) critters!
Ah-hah, pelle ..
Sooo there is a drawback or two, in the use of those {squirrel proof} types of feeders, afterall!
{Here} this morning, the Juncos had staked claim to the suet log feeder. Of course, with finding the fly-thru feeder right next door to be empty - may aid in justifyin' their surprisingly 'bullyish' behavior somewhat. .. LOL ..
'Scuse this photo, for it's taken thru the wee tiny lil snow flurries & a dirty kitchen window glass. There's a Downy, a White-Throated Sparrow, an American Goldfinch and about three 'greedy' lil Juncos ..

Sadie: I also have a territorial mockinbird. He started out just chasing others off the suet, but now he seems to have expanded his domain to every feeder out there! It's too many for him to guard effectively, so he was busy today swooping from one side of the tree to the other. He'd go one way, and this little flurry of wings would go the other. It was funny to watch, but difficult to get on 'film'.
