lindacran asked about building the least expensive home and I have wondered what is the least exp. or most efficient plan? An A frame? I am not building but there are alot of ugly new homes out there and wonder why. I want to pull a few developers aside and inform them!!!!!!
Assuming you are working with the same type of materials (wood framing + vinyl siding for example), the cost is going to depend on the total amt of material needed, so it's really more a factor of the square footage of the house. If you have two houses with similar square footage and similar materials of construction on the same type of lot, they're going to cost about the same to build. If it's the exterior finishes (vinyl siding instead of stone/brick for example, lack of architectural detailing, etc) that are making the house ugly then it could be a cost thing, but if it's the overall style of the house that's probably not it. Different framing methods are going to vary in cost--prefab houses are going to tend to be cheaper per sq ft than site-built houses, wood framing is cheaper than steel, etc but those sorts of things don't necessarily impact the outside look of the house.
