i have hard water from my well. i have 5 year old copper pipes. i get rust under rim of toilet. i get white (scale?) on shower marble. will my water damage my pipes? thank you, barb

As a rule, I don't particularly like water softeners, but you and your plumbing might benefit from one. OR - a filtration system that is designed for your area. You might want to contact and discuss with the county agent, or local plumbers.

bubba hit it right on the head. talk to a professional plumber about the options. you will need more than just a water softerner though because they only soften your water, but do nothing about rust. if you buy one, get a good one (which means spend some money) and ask your plumber about the effects of salt water (potassium chloride is a salt too) on your plumbing system, and tailor it to your circumstances and you will be happy. if you let yourself be sold before you know enough about the system, you and your piping will be sorry.
