We recently finished some drywall sanding in one area of our home. Now I'm struggling to get rid of all the dust (we have all laminate and tile flooring, so there are very few places to trap the dust. I feel like I'm chasing air in a balloon - squeeze one end and you just push it to the other end.

I use the vacuum, microfiber cloths, damp rags with pledge anti-static spray, dustmops, brooms, swiffer, damp mop, you name it. It's driving me nuts! Any suggestions for getting it out of here once and for all?

I'm also wondering if it's just the drywalling project, or if that's just brought the problem to a head. Our house is 30 years old, on a crawlspace foundation. We have two indoor animals (one large dog, and one longhaired cat) - they definitely contribute to the problem, but it just seems this house is TERRIBLY dusty, all the time - and always has been.

(one benefit of the recent posts list is I find stuff I would've never seen otherwise! ah hah!)

I've had this issue in some apartments I've lived in, while not in other locations. Is the house near a busy street? Breezy windows? I found one apartment I lived in was on a moderately busy road, with leaky windows, and I couldn't get ahead of the dust...

Maybe wait for a day when you can shut off the HVAC, close the windows, and close all the room doors - Tackle one room at a time. This way, the air vents from the HVAC aren't pushing the dust around, and the open-window breezes aren't doing the same.

OOH! Just thought of something - Change out your HVAC filters!!

Do you have central air/heat? Some of the dust may be recirculating. Once inside the ductwork, it can take a very long time to get out.

The windows and storm windows are single pane and original to the house. I'm hoping to get replacement windows this spring, which should make the house more energy efficient (and maybe less dusty, too.) We're at the end of a dead-end, quiet street, but there has been a lot of construction around us for several years and that could be contributing to the problem.

And yes, we have a central heat/air unit. I change the filter on it every month, and use good quality disposable filters that are supposed to last 90 days (and each month, the old filter is pretty nasty.)

New construction anywhere around your neighborhood will certainly stir up the dust and make more inside your home.

I'd love a solution to this alla time dusty problem. I thought a new heating/ductwork system would take care of it. Nope. Then I figured the new tight fitting windows were going to fix it. Nope. I swear it recirculates thru the furnace despite the filter changes, and I am really tired of chasing the stuff.

gonna 'watch' this thread in case someone really comes up with a really solution. Like has anyone had luck with those air filters they sell on tv? My friend got one and decided it had a big down side in the time and effort in cleaning the collecting grids.

I have one of the small table-top units. It really did seem to help when I couldn't sleep due to allergies. I have the Hamilton Beach True Air. It's around $30 and the filters are about $10 each. They do trap a lot of dust. It's not a solution for an entire house but you might try it in areas you frequent. It made a difference for me.
