| I am looking for a square open front poncho pattern to knit . My sister brought me some nice chunky yarn to work up while my son is in the hospital . I keep seeing a woman walk by his room wearing a square open front poncho not knitted but I like the look of it I think I know what to do but I am sort of a novice at this any simple patterns out there ?

| Hi,
I don't know if it would fall under "square shawl" or open front poncho. There are many patterns here: http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/shawls_stole... for shawls and lots of ponchos here: http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/ponchos.php
Maybe you will find something like what you are looking for.
Hope this helps,

| thanks you guys I am checking my e-mail from the hospital computer and I was happy to find your replies! I am thinking I might have to crochet it because I can't quite concentrate here in the hospital enough to knit

| Laura, just so you know Lion Brand also has patterns for crocheted ponchos. Maybe you can find a pattern there. |

| Maybe just make a bunch of granny squares - no pattern needed - and then sew them together in the style or shape you like? They are square, quick, easy, low concentration and can use up lots of "leftover" colors. Granny squares are great for sitting in hospitals or Doctor's offices because they are so easy to pick up and put down in a hurry.
Just a thought,

| when I hear the phrase "open front poncho" I also think "ruana" - which is basically a long rectangle with a slit a little mor than half-way up - you put the center of the slit at the center back collar point and bring the sides around. The drape of them is wonderful - I have one my mother did as a folded-doubleweave (you open it full width as you take it off the loom) for my graduation present, that I adore all these decades later. You can knit one in loooong garterstitch, if you're brave enough to do garter stitch forEver; here's one a friend did for his sister:

(If you haven't encountered the knitting weblog of Franklin from Chicago before, you may be in for several lost hours reading and laughing. I'm not sorry.)
Enjoy! |

| About a year ago I found a lovely pattern in a knit shop and began knitting what I would call a split poncho of maybe a ruana. The weather got warm and I put it aside. Today I found it again and thought, well let's finish this baby and lo and behold, the pattern is gone! I've turned the house upside down and can't find it. I'd like not to spend the $12 again and drive the distance to the shop which isn't near me. So I'm turning to you folks in the hope that maybe someone has this pattern and can tell me how to finish it. The pattern itself was printed on card stock and had an actual photo of the finished piece pasted onto the card. Inside was the pattern.
Here's the description: It is done in garter stitch and a worsted weight yarn. I'm using Lion Brand Homespun. It is actually a giant square, but it is knit on the diagonal and there is a split from one corner to the center so you can wrap it around you instead of pulling it over your head. There is a small detail along the edge. It looks like maybe there is a yarn over 3 stitches in to give that effect. I've completed about 3/4 of the garment and am on the last triangle of the split part.
Anyone recognize this? Thnaks for any help you could provide!

| I hope you found what you were looking for - I've just ordered the Folk Shawls book for that ruana pattern. I just love it!
But most of all, I hope your son is doing well. I pray he is no longer in the hospital and is doing well.
