A friend of mine told me yesterday that our local Lowes just got tree peonies in. They are Chinese varieties. He said they were labeled by color only but the cultivar name was attached to the plant inside the package. They were Red - Wu Long Peng Sheng; Pink - Zhu Sha Lei; and Purple - he didn't remember the name. They are probably showing up all over the country at Lowes and Home Depot. These central plains cultivars of Chinese tree peonies don't do well here in my part of the midwest (Near Kansas City) because they break dormancy at first sign of spring and then they are damaged by a later freeze. The Northwest Chinese cultivars and Japanese cultivars of tree peonies do much better for my location.
I don't generally recomment the box stores for the source of tree peonies but at $9.99 the risk is not that bad, If you are going to try them you should do so before they sit in the store and get dried out.
I did buy a package of Wu Long Peng Sheng about 5 years ago. The boxes were rather dried out but I chose one that had 3 very small plants in it. It looked like they weren't big enough to put in individual boxes so they stuck more than one in the box. I ended up with 3 plants for $6.99.
