Sigh. All my clumping bamboos now have dead leaves in various pale shades. Two weeks ago was the coldest night yet of the winter; I don't think it went that much under 20F, but most of my plants are exposed: my land is a clearing of about 20 acres, former farmland atop a low, gentle ridge, and heat just radiates into space.

I was doing so well. My clumpers tend to shoot late and the new culms are not hardened off before the first frost. These are not tropicals, either, but textilis and ventricosa and a few slightly more tender things, and I though that for once they'd get through the winter without frozen leaves. At least most of the culms look unhurt.

Yeah, yeah, this is a bit long after the fact but I need to unburden myself.

Mark., sigh
