Hello fellow trash to treasurers,

First, I hope the trademark didn't come out as my own,
as the picture (image) belongs to Kimberlianne, not me.
I think my copyright settings might write on top of hers,
which is not my intention. I didn't see the 'is this image your
own' option.

I didn't want Kimberlianne's wind chimes to go unnoticed on
another thread, so I am putting this one here for a discusssion.

Kimberlianne, I have wanted to make these for so long, I love them!

Ever since I saw them in an old Mother Earth News, I have been
in love with the thought of making recycled bottle wind chimes. If
I can only talk my sister in law into selling me one of her kilns.

Kimberlianne, would you be willing to share your technique on
this forum? I know there are many folks out there lucky enough to
have a kiln, and I think this is a fabulous way to recycle.

Hope you didn't mind me taking the liberty of starting this
thread in your name. LOVE your project!

Very Nice! I just wish we could "Hear" that lovely sound of the bottle glass tinkling in the breeze! I admire all you folks who have such talents! I am so envious! I am not very creative and have no talent in making anything!

We are thinking of having a Garden Gadget/Garden Whimsy swap over on the House Plant Forum ... I would love to make a swap for some of those chimes, or one of Karen Marie's Garden Cloches!

Thanks, Karen. No, I don't mind you posting the pics. I have a Gryphon C-40 Band Saw that I use to cut the beer bottles, wine bottles, etc. It takes approx. 45 minutes to get 8 rings/circles from one bottle. (That is why I am looking for a faster cutter) You have to go really slow with the band saw or the blade will break (they are expensive, $90.00 for two). Take your time in cutting, doesn't matter if the cut is even or not as this will melt when put into the kiln. Clean the rings with glass cleaner or whatever works for you. Dry them off and put them into the kiln (on mine) setting #1 for 30 minutes with the lid cracked open about 2". Go to setting #3 for 45 minutes, then to setting #5 for 30 minutes, then finally to the MAX setting for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Let it cool off about 3 to 4 hours BEFORE opening the kiln. When cooled to take out of kiln clean again with hot or warm soapy water and dry off. Then get your hanger, I use drift wood from the Satilla River here in south GA. drill small holes in the wood and string up your chimes. It is so simple and so great to hear the sounds they make. I have made 3 of them and have melted liquor and wine bottles in the kiln with a hook inside to hang out of the tree in the backyard. People say my tree is a "Redneck" tree. I don't care, I like the looks of it. Any questions, feel free to ask. Thanks.

Oh, Kimberlianne, thank you!

Redneck schmedneck. You're helping the environment,
keeping trash out of landfills and no doubt attracting birds,
which in turn helps the environment.

I don't have very nice words for someone who bashes
a person who can make something out of nothing. Typically
comes from someone who just buys an expensive import item and
calls it a day.

Anyhow. Back to your lovely chimes which I so adore!

Do you have any fancy restaurants nearby? Maybe any that
serve wine? You might pop into one and ask the manager if
he or she would save a few bottles for you. Heck, I'm brave
enough to head for a restaurant I don't even dine at to ask if
they have any bottles in the trash I could have, LOL.

I look forward to a lot of interest in these chimes. I'm so envious
of your kiln!

I love them!! I wish I had a kiln too.
You know one summer I went to the beach with some friends to surf fish. The boys made a huge bonfire because we were fishing in the middle of the night. On one of the boys suggestion I stuck his beer bottle in the fire on the red hot coals to see what would happen. It melted into a flat ashtray/spoon rest shape. I had seen wind chimes that looked like that at a flea market and wondered how they'd done it. It sure didn't take long for that bottle to slump down. I guess it was kinda Raku fired! ;) Thanks for showing these KM and Kimberlianne.

You know, that is a great idea.

We live in the country and as such, burn quite often. We have a sort of
bog indention in the land where we burn a lot of brush, tree clippings, etc.

I wonder if there is something we can put into the fire, maybe stack a
few fire bricks from an old wood burning stove or something, then put
a bottle in there. Would I need a wash for the bricks so the glass would
not stick?

Silly idea, likely, but worth entertaining. LOL

Kimberlianne,

Very nice looking chimes.

What size, model, type, whatever of kiln do you have?

Also, have you ever tried a "wet" tile saw like flooring contractors use to cut ceramic tiles. I've never tried one, but a friend of mine says they cut glass very quickly. I've seen them at HD and other stores for $80 & up.

Hello Dgwm,

I have a tile saw and cut bottles all the time, but for
some reason, I can't talk Kimberlianne to send her kiln
to my house. *grin*

I've watched the newspapers, I've scoured the classifieds,
but alas, no kiln. Last summer there was a great deal, but
I himmed and hawed too long, and it was sold. As I have so
many hobbies, I'm not going to invest in a brand new kiln.

But I love my little tile saw. I bought it at Lowes for 70-80 dollars,
but I'm not sure which dollar in between. Love it, love it!

Enjoy reading all yours posts...Kimberlianne, I have an electronic kiln that you program..only has the one timer..do you think it could do same...with doing stained glass I have soooo many odd's and ends...saw a windchime done using a ice cream soda dish with beads and glass..do you think I can remember which site?

For those of you without a kiln, most local stained glass shops now offer firing capabilities because of all the glass sagging and slumping..know the studio nearby me allows people to bring in up to 8 bottles which when sagged turns into beautiful cheese trays..then the slumped alleys provide the legs...think they charge $15.00 for the firing..so it is possible you can do same with sagging these sections without major cost to your pocket until you decide if it's something you wish to do on a large scale...maybe????

Eight bottles for $15.00 sounds like a heck of a deal, considering
many sell the cheese trays for much more per tray.

I don't intend to take over the craft market, but the cheese trays are
something I've always admired. I love crafts that involve using things
that would otherwise end up in the dump, but don't look like trash with
a bow on it.

Betty, thanks for your post, it reminds me to ask the local ceramic
store about cones.

Kim,

I'm so envious of you, alread doing your chimes. Sigh.

I just received the book yesterday and was a bit disappointed
to find it was just a small booklet with a few pages.

The white stuff on the chimes, not a concern, I just thought maybe
it was calcium carbonate, which a lady on another site mentioned
she uses. It sounds like she spreads calcium carbonate on the shelves
and then lays the glass rings on it, but that is just my guess. I hung
them on my porch and LOVE the way they look when the sun sets on
them. :-)

A Jager bottle? Wow!

Kim, do you ever make those cheese tray things with a bottle, and if so,
do you have any opinion on the molds that are often used for such?

Hi everybody.
I am italian, I live in italy.
I started to work with glass almost ten years ago.
I used glass bottles since the beginning.
It was not my invention as bottles have being used since 60 years ago, even in Murano, to make glasses or other things.
I met a woman in Lima making glasses, goblets and other things with bottles, then I met a very nice american lady in Costa Rica( I wish I could contact her) and then many others.
Many of them don't like to share experience...wrong.
I like the forum.
You must to exchange experiences, never trademark a new idea, and remember that nobody can steal your creativity.
Do not copy a design, just use it as a inspirational tool for your art and then do something different.
Keep going. Tile saw are the secret!

Hi Cheryl,

It is my understanding the bottles do not come in those
colors, but are painted or treated with a liquid paint. I
only wish they came in such pretty colors, but sadly, many
of the bottles you see in pink, red, etc. are coated with a
film.

Many antiques are colored in the same way, I discovered
that when I began buying broken or damaged glass for
the color, only to find the 'finish' came off in the rock tumbler.

I Know that Kim has put glass/marbles in bottles and slumped them. But everything I have read & been told is Thats a big NO NO ... just a bomb waiting to happen in your kiln ... or it will crack later ... if your not selling its no big deal about the later part .. but im not sure about the bomb...lol

Hi Kim,
when I was in the States I used to buy a lot of glass products at Bendheim, New Jersey.
Another good source of tools and glass paints is this place
http://www.sundanceglass.com/glass-paints.htm

I am sure you can find a supplier near you but this one ship worldwide.

A friend of mine used left overs from nail paint once the glass was already melted.
I personally enjoy the original color of the bottles.
If you mix bottle glass together the melted glass could break after long time, be careful not to sell it. The best mix is dark green and clear, but the stress is always there.

Once you cut a ring try to put broken glass in the middle of the ring before fusing!

Which tile saw do you use?

Morning ilathefrog,

It is just a blue/gold 7" wet tile saw bought at Lowe's. After seeing your site, (which is great) I had some broken rings that i put together for the next firing, came out nice enough. If you know of any web sites over there please post them for Karen and the rest of us.

There is a liquid form of gold for glass fusing. It is really a nice effect.

A great site is http://www.vetromaghie.com,
but they do glass blowing.
They use only bottles and we often work together.
At the moment I don't know of any other italian web site
similar to ours,
who knows in the future.
I will update you.
By the way..
did you know about Grandma Prisbey??
Google her and find out.

Hello Ilathe and Pepper,

Ilathe, your link was just a little broken, here is a working
link for others to view:

http://www.vetromaghie.com/

A good internet friend of mine once visited Tressa Prisbrey's Bottle
Village and was kind enough to send real pictures my way:

http://davesgarden.com/place/t/613149/

Indeed I admire the woman. She used what she had. She didn't have teachers,
books, or HGTV for ideas. The woman used pure imagination.

Funny how many would call her work trash, unable to see beyond the
cosmetic aspects. The lady had a grand imagination. Pure, uncopied,
original imagination.

Two thumbs up to Tressa, may she rest in peace.

I'm so envious of all the talent I see one here. I don't have an artistic bone in my body. I have 13 oak trees in my back yard and would love to have a dozen of those "red neck wind chimes"! I bought a couple of ones made from old silverware from a nice old man at the farmers market. Thanks for sharing!

ilathefrog,
I was just on your web page ... Great stuff .. Now I have so many more ideas running around in my head. I have gotten my saw( still unused) & have been begging bottles from everyone I know (getting strange looks). They all think im a little nuts any way ...lol (But they thought that when I was after their old blue jeans too for Quilts.)
I wonder what they will think when they get their bottles back for Christmas :-)
Thanks for shareing your work.

Madeintheshade & Wuvie: Anymore thoughts, ideas, suggestions on putting bottles in a bonfire? I've already got tons of projects going on, but would love to make a couple of glass trays. I love colored glass! We ran across a place on our travels that sold colored glass "rocks". Bought several to set in the bay window with colored glass bottles and plants. Robin

Well after buying my saw in May I got to set it up today .. My first full day to play and its not RAINING. I didn't think I was ever going to cut up some bottles ...
I have 3 layers in the kiln and about 3 to 4 more kilns worth cut up :-)
But DH is going to build some kind of wall to keep all the glass from flying around ...
I knew the water would be kind of messy so I setup out side .. Good thing I did there was tiny bits of glass for 3+ feet in every direction.
I have cut (tiny cuts)my self more today then when IM doing stained glass :-) so I hope I get some good rings for wind chimes.
Ill post pictures tomorrow from the Kiln.

Msrobin,
I am so sorry I missed your post earlier this month,
I did not see it until Cheryl's post bumped the thread up, my apologies.
Sadly, I don't know much about bonfire rocks, but will certainly see what
information I can find for you.

Cheryl,
Alright, are you trying to make me envious? Are you trying to get me
to tears? My kiln is still not working! Hubby said we have 220 power in
the storage room, but that means a major overhaul and reorganization,
which I've been chipping at every so often.

Add reorganizing the room, and my project list is now rather extensive.
Wallpapering the bedroom, completely re-doing the pantry and the hot
water heater room are tops this week. Sigh.

Please do share anything and everything you can about making these
fabulous rings. I'm curious to know what you use to put them on the shelf
itself? Help this envious no-working-kiln-girl out, please? Tidbits, I need
tidbits! LOL.

Please?

Karen,
I also have a kiln that needs 220 power .. Hubby is an electrician Maybe ill get it soon :-)
been waiting oh lets see 8 mons now .. so I got http://www.Craigslist.com & bought a smaller kiln
" I'm curious to know what you use to put them on the shelf
itself? "
Its called Kiln Wash It comes as a power and you mix it with water . then you brush 3 to 5 coats of it in the shelf let it dry over night ... depending on what brand you use you have to redo every time or about 3 firings. You will need to kiln wash the bottom of the kiln also but try not to get it on the bricks and DON"T get it on the elements it will make them burn out.
Ill get a pic tomorrow of the rings in the kiln.
Cheryl

Cheryl,

My ribs are hurting and hubby can't quit laughing. If you do
not share our sense of humor or if I have offended you,
I offer an apology in advance. Dave, I hope I have not broken
any rules by posting this, as it is not my intent to do so.

Cheryl, in your post, you accidentally typed your husband was an 'election'
instead of an 'electrician'. As I have been telling hubs about all the
kiln discussions, when I told him about the post he was half listening
to the baseball game, he thought I said that you said your husband had
an e _ ection. He could not figure out what on earth that would have to do with a kiln,
and I could not stop laughing long enough to tell him that is not what
I said nor was it what you typed.

We were dying laughing and the puns to follow were all
the more humorous.

Hope you don't mind that I shared this, it was hilarious. Ya had to be here.

LOL

Well I checked the kiln last night . I found out you cant stack 3 layers in a top element glass kiln
only the top layer fused ( top 1/4 beer bottles) the other 2 layers look just like they did when they went in. So ill have to fire the rings again.
boy I wish my big kiln was hooked up
