So I ordered onions from Dixondale Farms after reading about you all raving about them in threads like this: [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]
The thing is, when you look at their catalogue, you can't help but order a lot. They get so much cheaper the more you buy and of course you have to pick a couple kinds to buy. Kind of like when my wife buys these huge packages of stuff at Sam's Club we'll never use...
So I bought a case split equally between red/white/yellow short-day variaties. That's 1800 onions... So I've been spending a lot of time planting onions recently and I have a few questions.
1) Do you all plant onion plants exclusively by hand or have any automation at all involved? (I'm half done at this point but I have a lot of other things I could be doing. :)
2) When you plant onion plants, what's your routine? Do you soak the onions in water before setting them out? How do you open the ground? I've mostly been doing the old; open a furrow with a hoe, space out the plants and cover them.
3) What sort of fertilizer do you use on onions? Because they're root crops I'm assuming I want something high in potassium like bone meal.
4) Do you mulch onions at all?
5) From the time you plant how soon do you have the smaller onions you sell in a bunch? They say like 90-100 days until maturity and I'm assuming that's a full-size bulb. If that's right I can pull full size onions in late June. One of our markets opens in mid-May, the other in mid-June so I'd be pulling some smaller ones for the first few weeks.
