My new little JM, 'Tiny Tim' has some leaves on the top half of its branches that are blackened. I'm not sure what caused this, but as it began to leaf out, the top halves just turned black. A couple of the leaves are starting to grow despite the black tips, but I'm not sure what to do. It is possible that temperature changes caused it, or maybe I let it dry out too much while it was budding out, but my others are just fine and they were treated exactly the same. I tried to let them just barely get dry and then water so that they could drain and not stay too wet in their 1 gallon pots.
Any advice? I could wait and see what happens, trim the tops of the branches off, as you know I've already said they were rather leggy, so I would not mind this tree becoming more rounded and shrubby at all. One side is already grown out quite a bit, probably due to sitting near the light cart indoors. I could always exchange it at the nursery if it is diseased, but I've gotten fond of it.
I've been repotting my JMs this weekend. I've used a potting mix, extra perlite and bark mulch to help drainage. I was kicking myself when I repotted that JM 'Bloodgood' that I had said stayed so small. It was very wet and the pot was too shallow for it, I think. The mix was very wet in the pot. I love that pot, but I put too much crushed stone in the bottom, so the tree did not have much mix to root into. It should be able to stretch out in the new pot and I put it in a sunnier location so that it can get bigger. I will need to find a permanent home for it, or I'll give it away or trade it to someone looking for a larger tree. It was one of the first ones I purchased and I had not idea how big they could get, and I really don't want large ones as I have tall oaks and I need at least some sun to grow sunnier perrenials under!
Thanks for all your advice folks, by the way, my maples are all doing much better this year than they have in the past.
