My house is brown with darker brown shutters. Red brick on the first floor. The roof is shingled and is a reddish color. I won't be painting the house for a while, but I do need some repair work on the wood around the door. I would like to change the color where the green is. Any suggestions? This is the only picture I have that shows most of the house.

I'd think about using...
the color of the mortar between the bricks
the color of the shutters
a color somewhere between the brick and the shutters
You can take your picture to some paint shops and play with the computer software they have
and see what you like too.

Are you saying your door is green? Looks white? But if white I'd think a dark green door would be nice. |

I would go bright red. Makes a focal point on the front door and would go with the rest of the house. Glossy BTW. |

You actually have quite a few things going on here: shutters, awnings, different first and second floor materials (brick, siding), lots of different shapes in the bushes in front, etc. I agree with Claypa; in order to keep things harmonious you would use analagous colors, as he suggested. But whatever you decide, I hope you'll post a photo of it!
EmmyC - here's an update. I was on a garden tour yesterday, and there was a house very similar to yours. The front door had been painted red, but then they glazed it with a brown glaze. It went beautifully with all the brick and clapboard and trim, but it still added that little splash of color and interest. I would have taken a picture but my camera was out of power.

Thank you, everyone for your suggestions. Yes, the front door and trim is a pale green...it does look lighter in the pictures. I'm attaching another picture which shows the house in the summer. The hedges in my first picture have been pulled. They used to surround big trees, but the City came along one year and cut them down. Sod will be put down soon.
I've decided I am going to have the house painted. I have been driving around looking for homes like mine with the brick. I've seen a few with other colors, but haven't liked them. So...I will keep it brown. I have no problems making decisions except when it comes to decorating in or outside. I had a new kitchen floor laid about a year ago, and now I'm don't like it. I just can't get a "vision".
All suggestions will be appreciated. Front entry? Trim? Shutters?

One idea, and take it for what it is worth, is to paint the large casing around the door a different color that the door itself. Maybe whatever you put on your trim, make the casing around the door like a trim. Even if you paint the house, I would probably paint casing to match window and other trim. If you don't go with color on the house, definitely on the door. It is a huge focal point. If you have concerns about resale value, it is only a door and you could repaint it. It doesn't have to be red. What colors do you like. My mother loves yellow, so her house is gray and her door and shutters are yellow. I have seen lavender, blue, green and all add pop to the house. If it is too bright, do like Missy said and paint over with a glaze to tone down the color. Also if you don't paint the exterior and don't have the money to replace the awnings, paint the shutters in the neutral color of the awings. It will defitely make it stand out and give it dimension. My two cents are over and I am not even going to for it.
Good luck,

Black cherry for the door and shutters. I'm back to the red but black cherry is red and won't stand out as much with the brown but should look nice. |

Love the idea of black cherry, the light green is lovely but timid, such a pretty house needs a "look at me" color, and add a few plants with the same red in the leaves or flowers. |

I'd be tempted to buy one of those "landscape or painting" computer programs that allow you to change colors and plantings etc. Possibly, get rid of some of the evergreen plants RIGHT next to the front door to open that area up to view more. Consider the shutters the neutral color of the awnings AND around the door area. Then paint the door SEVERAL shades brighter of the same red as the roof. I'd consider doing something different with the garage door colors too... maybe the neutral. The "sea of brown" is not as attractive as it could be.
Who knows? Maybe if you tried that on the computer the results would be hideous! That's the beauty of "trying" it before hand. |

yeah i think there isn't enough contrast. shutters are same brown as house. front door, shutters and garage doors need brighter color. tan, red, orange, something |

Really, the more I think of it, the more I think investing some money in the computer program is a cheap way to try the color out. Some of the programs are cost less than a gallon of good exterior paint! |

Psychw, I have also wanted to get one too. I have played around with the interior ones for free on websites, but I would like an all inclusive with exterior and landscaping. Have you found such software? |
