This is something I'd like to do. I've read up about it on several websites, including This Old House, and it seems feasible if you put down a 6 mil moisture barrier and leave expansion room around the perimeter of the room.
Has anybody had any experience with this type of flooring. I would be hiring it out, not doing it myself. I had considered bamboo but have ruled it out for a variety of reasons. I am not interested in the Pergo type flooring. |

We did this ourselves. So long as no moisture gets through to the flooring, there is no problem, |

if you are going to hire it out, make sure you get a real good and fast working flooring person. also something to remember to add to your cost is quarter round/shoe molding. that has to be installed after the floor so that you dont see the area where the floor and the wall are. |

Rose, how Did your floor turn out? I have an enclosed double carport which is my den that I'd love to have done when my carpet needs replacing in a couple of years. I started to do it this time but was scared it wouldn't hold up as I have a dog in the house. Do you have any pets or children in the house? Thanks for any info. :) |

IO1,
I just finished this morning installing an engineered wood floor on 1.25 inches of plywood & OSB nailed into 2X6 joists about 15 inches apart (not concrete). I had to spend $75 for glue and $400 for the flooring & sponge matting. Moisture (thanks be to whatever) is not an issue. We did this ourselves. The work is tiring but given the alternatives of carpet or tile or linoleum ... we got this 260 sq ft room floor done for about $2/ sq. ft ... and that includes all the joists/hangers, OSB, plywood, nails and baseboard trim & threshold. This entire project cost $1k and the floor cost half of the entire project. That is news to me and good information for anyone planning to an addition. We bought our flooring material at 37.5% of the original price ($15/box vs $40 original price). If we had paid the normal price for the engineered wood flooring ... this project would have cost more like $1.5k and the floor would have been 2/3rds of the cost of the entire project.
