I love your sweet peas! I've been trying to grow some myself, and they just aren't growing at the rate I thought they would. I started them indoors from seed around the end of February, and I planted them outdoors a couple of weeks ago. Did you start these from seed or did you buy plants? None of the nurseries in my area sold these plants. Any suggestions as to how I could get mine looking as good as yours? :) Thanks! |

I'm right outside of New Orleans and here you start sweet peas in october from seed directly in the flower bed.. Usually I put inoculant on the seeds and soak them overnight to help them get started but it wasn't available so I used earthworm castings I bought from a local business. The vines were 8 feet tall. I did plant the vines closer than recommended but had no problems with pests. I had 2 -12 foot rows; huge bunches of flowers. Just pulled them up...they can't take the heat...will go in the compost bin. Here you can lose the sweet peas in a hard freeze but that is the only way we can grow them...start in the fall and cross your fingers. Click the image for an enlarged view.
