I have a modern toilet fill-valve. When I flush, the toilet runs for up to 20 minutes. When I take off the lid and poke the float, it pops right up and stops running.

jiggling the handle hasnt helped
there is no leaking (that I can detect)

is there a way to prevent my newish fill valve from sticking like that?

It might be expedient to replace the valve. They are only a few $$.

The new vertical ones seem to have a lot less problems than the old "long-arm" valves, but I have replaced a few.

Have you tried tightening the screw that holds the float? If you tighten it a little clockwise it will lower the overall water in the tank and might trigger the float to stop the water prior to it reaching its sticking point.

thanks for the tip. i attached a string to the fill falve float so i can pull it up manually while i wait for the landlord to fix it. i looked up replacing it myself online, but it looks slightly beyond my ikea generation, shoe-hammer weilding, and pocketknife-screwdriver using skills.

ROFL! I can totally relate, and I am a homeowner with those dubious skills. However, I can tighten a screw! So that's what I'll try first, before buying a new part. Simple when you know what to do. Thanks jessums.

You have to take it out and replace the line leading to the water line, I believe. It has been a while since I changed mine. But if you have a landlord, send him the water bill also. If you can get someone to do it for you, why not.
