Helen, how exciting!!! Dont you just love those guys? I had 2 of them in my crepe myrtle next to the house, and I couldnt believe the racket they were making. I wasnt sure it was them, but I snuck over and saw them chattering and squeaking. Who knew such little guys (I think they are aliens myself) could make so much noise. I love that feeder, too. Where did you get it?

Yay! So glad you have your first one this year. I still haven't had one at any of my 3 feeders :( Of course, there are no flowers around either so it probably isn't very tempting.

That feeder is one of the h-birds' and MY favorite! Very easy to clean and the opening is big enough you don't need a funnel to fill it. And none of those pesky flowers, bee guards, etc. to clean or for the squirrels to tear off! It's also about $5.60!

Darn. I hope I can find them locally - I'd be willing to pay more if I could find them closer by - I have about a 35 mile trip each way to get to the nearest Walmart and with the price of gas, it would raise the cost substantially!!!

35 miles to the nearest WalMart?!?!?! Holy hummingbird!!! I have one within about 5 miles in every direction from me. It's a tradeoff for all the smog, pollen and illegals!
I just checked online... not there... there are two there but they're glass and more expensive.
How about a Target? Any closer? They had them there when I was looking the other night... about $1 more, but if you have a Target close, that could be an option!

Yay! I'm so excited for you Pell! I saw a hummer on Sunday evening. Got a totally crapalacious (made up that word lol) picture of it that I won't even post. It drank and drank at the feeder like it was starving. It hung around that evening and I haven't seen one since. I'm thinking maybe it was on its way up north.

I'll have to find one of those feeders too. Ease of filling and cleaning always sounds good to me. :-)

Me either till we moved here! lol! We can go about 12 -15 mile east or west of where we live to get groceries and drugstores. But for box stores gotta go over one more town!! You learn and try real hard not to forget something important. Oh, and we do have a small gas station/conveneint store about 5 miles from our house.

My stepmother couldn't believe we moved out here in the middle of nowhere. Of course she lives in Cape Coral Fl. I was used to Walmart being 10 min. away before, Big change! But once you get use to it not that bad and I save money! No impulse shopping...except online!! lol!

I wouldn't trade living "in the country" for anything and when I visit my folks in Seattle twice a week, I make regular stops at Fred Meyer which I do like (they like me, too!). Here on the island we have a great grocery store four miles away, and an Ace Hardware which has a terrific garden center.

Internet shopping been a killer for me - soooooooo addicting!!!!

Thanks for finding the info on those feeders, Pell & Halo - I really appreciate that and will probably order from one of those places if I don't find what I want this weekend at Fred Meyer.

HeymeitsJudy, I could conceivably find a Target this weekend, too, when I'm in Seattle - I used to go to one frequently when I lived there.

"crapalacious" - Lily, that is to become my favorite word . . . love it!!!

Betterbloom, thanks. I'l l try that. So far I don't have birds or bees. I have the feeder hanging on a trellis that has blooming heart vines on it. I trimmed the vines way back a few weeks ago and the one on the right is growing faster than the one on the left. Must just be how I trimmed it. I had humming birds in the back yard 2 years ago, I haven't seen any yet this year.

This is good to know, Betterbloom! I talked to my aunt who lives near Kansas City last night and she's disgusted that her neighbor (a bee keeper) hasn't feed his bees and since they had a late frost, there is no where for the bees to get food other than her feeders. She enjoys watching hummers as much as I do (she's who got me hooked) and had to take her feeders down because the stupid bees were swarming her feeders. I'm actually nervous for her to be outside. I'll be sure and tell her about the Pam!

Judy, I had to take down my feeders last year because of the bees. It got so bad I couldn't even go outside, There were swarms of them. I tried everything before I read about Pam (not the butter kind), after spraying it on, haven't seen one on my feeders.

Pelletory, Hope this is OK. I thought I would post a pic of my feeder. This is the best feeder I have ever had. It has 2 parts and the hanging rod. The bottom has an outside ring that fills with food (the area covered with the red top) then there is a cup that the rod goes through that you fill with water to keep ant's out of the food. The top just snaps on and it has a molded perch that goes all the way around. I like feeders with perches. It is so easy to clean and I have never had an ant problem since I got this feeder. Mine only holds about 1 cup of feed.

Holly, that's the hummzinger, yes? Mine loved it the first year but since then have shown more interest in the perky pet one Pell showed in his first picture. Both are super easy to clean. Another great thing about the zinger is that you can tell by looking how much food is left.. other feeders, the stuff goes into the bottom so much, you can't tell how much goo is left.

Hi Holly, Sure its fine; post any photo you want. I have that same one but mines a Droll Yankee feeder. Last summer was the first I used it but the juveniles couldn't figure it out; they kept tapping the bottom of it with their beaks, lol. It is a nice feeder and I'll be trying it again this year. I'll let you know if they figure it out this time.

I have one similar to that for the orioles. The differences are it's orange, has more feeding holes, and dimples to put grape jelly in. Also, you can put half an orange in the center - put the rod through it. Orioles love both of those extra treats. Those of you with bee problems wouldn't want to do that, of course. The orioles really prefer this feeder. The hummers will use it, too, but usually each sticks to their own and we can watch them all feeding at the same time.

Thanks Pelletory, We always have Hummers and I have several plants that they like. But although I watch them come and go all day, I don't think there are a lot of them. Never see more than a few at one time, maybe 3 or 4 so this little feeder works good for me.
Judy, I'm not sure of the name, I picked it up at a garden show several years ago and like it so much better than some of the others I have tried.
Kaperc, I'd love to feed the, Orioles we do have them in the area but I hardly ever see them. Usually I will see a pair or two. Here for a day and then gone. I wonder is it a "Feed them and they will come" kind of a thing. There is a creek pretty close and I think they stay down there. I've seen them along the creek when canoeing. Although bees are an issue we have a lot of them. Wasp, Bee, Yellow Jackets and Hornet are a consent battle here all summer long and althought I think of them as benifical my husband is allergic. I have alot of plants that Hummers and Butterflies like a couple of apple trees and several water sources not to mention the mud spots. So since we provide all the things they like you can't blame them for comming too.

Yes, we have to take the fun with the not-so-fun! My husband put a pond in a few months ago and I just know it is going to provide some things we don't like along with all the pleasure. So far, though, it's such an asset we're just enjoying it. The birds are, too!

Holly if you see 3 or 4 then you have 12. I've seen around a dozen at one time at my place so I know theres quite a few of them. As soon as the trumpetvines start blooming, they'll hardly use the feeders at all until migration time.

Thats nice that you have a creek nearby, you must be having quite an assortment of birds.

Yes we have a lot and I fill the feeders the main 3, Songbird mix, Sunflower, Thistle are always full. Then there is the suet in winter and Hummer in the summer plus we have several water sources and lots of bird houses. I have woods behind the house but Meadows are becoming more sparse. I haven't spent much time in the Birdwatching forum probably because I can't get very good pictures with my camera. Just won't zoom in that far and the birds that come close and they really do, just don't photo well through my triple pane glass.

I finally got a picture of one. This is the third sighting for me this spring but first picture. I went to great lengths to get the feeders up to front window level this year. Hopefully that will help get better photos.

Wow, it sounds like you get way more hummers than me Pell. I get excited if I see two at once at my feeders lol. Once the babies arrive I do see little "squadrons" chasing themselves around the house but I have never seen as many as 12. Maybe this year!
