I found several pigeons hanging on the power lines yesterday afternoon. I think of these guys as parking lot birds because it's usually in a parking lot that I see them. They have some of the most beautiful colorings to their feathers and they are all different.

Here's a group of them

I got a few pictures while out gardening today of the chickadees tending their brood in the bird house. Here we are bringing home some lunch - "we need to eat all our greens (worms) to grow up big and strong!"

Thanks Pell! You know whats kind of funny?... there is a mockingbird nest just a few feet away from the chickadee house in my hawthorn tree. They don't seem to mind being close to each other at all! In fact sometimes the mockingbird stands on top of the chickadee house and the dees don't mind. On the other hand the mockingbird chases other birds away that are similar in size to itself. It hates seeing any robins near its nest. I wonder if the dees and the mockers don't consider each other competition because of the size difference.

Here is the mocker nest but its not the best picture.

Its nice to see such new pretty green leaves. And a very pretty cardinal to go with it!

It was funny to see both of the swallows at the entrance hole at the same time. i can't tell which is the male and which is the female. They were keeping very close tabs of each other lol. At one point there were actually 3 swallows IN THE BOX! I read up on them and found out that they are very gregarious and like to nest near each other kind of like purple martins. In fact sometimes they will use purple martin condos.

Pelletory, you struck gold, with that red and green. It is so rewarding to capture such a beautiful sight. Wonderful pictures.

I awoke to clear blue sky. Thankful for the bright sun light for the first time in a week. I drove the mile down to West Chester Lagoon, hoping for good shots of Bufflehead. To my surprise, a thin crust of ice had formed over most of the Lagoon, during the night. The birds were all clustered on a small area of open water in the middle.

It's really interesting seeing all the sea bird shots you post Grass. I don't get to see those here in the Tennessee boonies.

Gardenpom I LOVE your squirrel shot. Its so clear and sharp.

Are you a gardener Deb in SC? That has been crimping my style lately too. As usual, I am behind in my gardening plans. When the daylily boxes start arriving I plunge into frenzy mode. I've been setting up the tripod on the lawn by one of the bird houses. I work a bit and then I take a break behind the camera for a bit. On Saturday I got these shots of a Carolina Wren getting ready to plunder the meal worm feeder. It was right after we had a sudden bout of cold rain. Here he or she is trying to air dry.

I love your wren pics. Today, I was clearing out some of my gardening "junk" that had cluttered the garage over the winter and discovered a wren is building a nest in the garage. This could be a problem since we close it during the day when we're not at home. Torn between discouraging the birds but tearing out what they've built, and leaving the garage door open for a few weeks! Hmmmm.

Thx Gras! I will tell him. :o). I have seen several patrolling the fields near our house. Man that Alaskan landscape is really breathtaking! Been too long since I've been to the mountains. As you've heard, it's pretty flat here, however the visibility is at least 10 miles on a clear day from the top of a hill.

Lily~ The swallows are precious! I see Barn Swallows here, flying over my yard, hoping to snap up any number of flying insects I keep here. So cool they might lease one of your vacant condos. Glad they get along with mockers too. Love those MBs, the senturies of the garden. They have regular wing flaps with Robins here. Especially when cherries & mealies are put out there.. about 2-3x a day. & I love that Wren!!

GP your offereings are always choice!
Oh Pell, Cardinal in Apple tree... excellent shot!

Couldn't see what she (BT Grackle), had in her mouth here> She must have been trolling the fast food joints and got super-size leftovers..lol. That can't be good for them!! (That stuff has already been tested on people, been found to be sorely lacking.)

Gras, honestly, your photos give me goosebumps (and not from thinking about the cold!) - they are beyond awesome. The scenery is superb, of course, as are the birds, but your ability to capture all that action so beautifully is just wonderful.

Resin, it was a pleasure to see one of your photos - you're usually too busy helping us id our sightings!! Very interesting ducks!

Unique, Deb, Pell, Lilyfantn, Gardenpom, your pics are marvelous - such incredible variety and heartwarming scenes.

I hope to have something to contribute soon - I haven't had much chance to take photos. I need to reset my priorities, I think!!!

The hawk was w/i 20 feet, I suppose. I'd seen it in a dead cedar at the neighbors, and to get into position for images I had to go through my barn and into the pasture area. While I was there, it flew over the barn and landed in front of it. I opened the door slowly to see it sitting on the broken handle of a rake. I was able to snap several more photos before it moved just a few feet to a 2 X 4.
Here is when it moved.

Yep, agree with Osprey and Western Kingbird. The hawk (pic above) isn't large enough for Gos, it could be either Cooper's or Sharp-shinned. Difficult to judge the size in the pics, but the square-ended tail in the first pic does tend to favour Sharp-shinned.

There are feeders, but I also scattered quite a bit of seed on the ground, and the ground stuff seems to be what is attracting them. I put sunflower and I also bought a bag of "Wild Finch Blend" from Wal-Mart that has hulled sunflower and millet, etc., I got that specifically for the ground feeders, and they seem to like it.

Gardenpom,

That is a beautiful photo of the flycatcher. He is much prettier with some color behind him. :-) It really shows off his own colors more than sitting on a wire. Many times I want to get photos of birds and as soon as I click the shot, they will fly up to the power lines. The lighting/angle is never right to see their beautiful colors then.

This Grackle was so funny. He would grab a peanut (in the shell) off the platform feeder then take it right over to the bird bath and drop it in the water for a moment. Then pull it out and crack it open to eat. First time I've seen that.

The Grackles I have here seem to like to drop almost everything into the water before eating. Especially the peanuts. I usually have to clean the birdbath twice a day! Thanks for the nice comments on the Flycatcher photo. I was so pleased he came down and gave me a chance for a better shot.

Gardenpom, you've already had a ton of comments, but I too want to tell you what an incredible photo of the Flycatcher - stunning!

Pelle, the crows around here get shellfish from the beach area, then fly up and drop them to break the shell so they can eat them. The gulls do it as well. Fun to watch.

What great catches Gardenpom! The flycatcher pictuure is awesosme! Judging by all the gorgeous flowers on that bush it looks like summer is already there where you are.

I love that grackle shot Pell. They always look so fierce with those yellow eyes!

Murmur what an interesting landing shot of your gulls. The only thing I really miss living here in the hinterlands of Tn is being near the sea. I really miss seeing shore birds and the salty fishy smell of low tide (seriously lol). Other than that, I love it here.

In all the time I was in South Louisiana, I only saw 2 Indigo buntings and 1 Rose breasted grosbeak, so it is quite a thrill to have so many here. And we never saw the Goldfinches in their summer glory there.

This is one of eight Bald Eagles perched around a small lake in Portage Valley, Alaska yesterday. They seemed to be checking the dinner menu for available species of duck.

This morning I watched a Bald Eagle fly over East Chester Lagoon and flush all of the ducks and geese. Then it returned and tried to catch a Canada Goose in flight. The eagle was really quite clumsy and was never able to quite touch the goose. Then the gulls attached the eagle and it fled circling back over the lagoon again. Unfortuantely, there was a large clump of alders between me and the action, so I didn't get any pictures.

I have seen an eagle get a baby swan before, and many ducks and of course fish. But never a goose. I sure know that the geese are scared of eagles, so I always assumed they were part of the food chain too. What a show you saw! You just have to be there at the right time and be watching.

Thanks Pelletory. Now that I finally got a picture of an Eagle soring, I won't be satisfied until I get one with feather detail. While frustrated this morning, because the Green-winged Teal were too far out for a good picture, again, this Wigeon walked right up too me. I already have good Wigeon photos, but at six feet, I couldn't resist a few shots. However, the mud background leaves a lot to be desired for artistic appeal.

We had an eagle sitting on a stump out front, a couple days ago. After sitting a while a goose started to swim by him, looked up and quickly turned around and swam away. Then the red-winged black birds started to dive-bomb the eagle. He shot out with his huge sharp beak and snapped at one of the red-wings that got too close. Those are some brave little birds.
I really appreciate all the pictures you post of the eagles. You really do a great job!

Yes, Every part of this feeder was recycled. The wood was scraps from building the house, the screws were removed from another project that was taken apart, the bowl was from my mother's senior center dinner, and the skewers were from the kabobs from a BBQ.
I had seen a picture of a simular feeder and wanted one. I always feed oranges to the orioles, but the jelly was harder. Seems that raccoons also like grape jelly. This is working well, although not the prettiest, the oriole sure makes it look nicer.

I have a Sony also with the burst mode. We went to the beach for New Year's and I took some fireworks shots in burst mode. I didn't even know that was on my camera until the gal we were with said something about it. I can view them all on the camera, but once they get to the computer... I haven't yet figured out how to get individual photos from the single 16 photo shot. What's the secret??? Do I HAVE to read the manual??? Ugggggghh!!!! (Not my favorite thing to do since I have to figure out what they are trying to tell me not knowing gizmo language.)

The photo attached is the only one that I didn't snag a single photo from and then delete the rest. I loved the way the photos were "action" shots on the camera, but couldn't ever figure out how to show that on my computer.

(Oh my, I amuse myself, sometimes things should be left in the thought process and not get to the typing fingers)
Anyway, I had to go back to my oriole picture and see what the wire thing was. First of all, this is a very clear picture before I put it on here and by clicking on it I find it blurry. I am dissapointed. Second, those are just oak branches that you are seeing. I hung the feeder in a young oak and they are not leafed out yet. I had to look because I also have a chime in that tree, a hummer feeder, and a bird with spinny wings. Yet, the birds still come in.
