I had a fan at my old house that came with a remote, but you could operate it manually too. I used the light more than the fan, so I used the pull chains on the fan to set it so that when I turned the switch on the lights would come on but the fan wouldn't, then if I wanted to use the fan I could either use the remote or use the pull chains. Maybe yours is different and doesn't have the manual operation?

Well the chain worked on the speed of the fan...but the light doesn't...or at least I've not figured these things out yet. I'll have to inspect them better for a manufacturer name and go online for a manual I guess.

Thanks for the help! Who'da thought a remote would be so annoying.

The problem here is not knowing how they're wired. The remote lets you not have to run one more wire to a switch. If a wire to a wall switch doesn't exist, you'd need to add one. Or just use the pull string switches.

I think the reason all the manufacturers are selling these remote-controlled fans is you don't need the wall switch, it's an easier installation. My fans all have wall switches, some with dimmers, some without. I can't stand the remotes either. I'd rather tear up the wall and run another wire if I have to.

clay, makes sense.

Came from a new house and had 2 switches per room: one for light, one for fan blades. REALLY missing that feature now.

DH is a licensed electrician but between moving and OT at work (not as an electrician anymore) he's not looked at the fans yet. They are only remotes upstairs. And so annoying. Was going to have him install the 2 switches as soon as he can.

I wonder if they're doing this to new houses - installing remote controlled ceiling fans with no wall switch. That would be cheesey.

There's no industry standards either. Some are infra-red, some radio, and even usb now.

Oh no I moved from a new house with 2 switches per room for fans. Now I'm in an old home with 1 switch and then remote controlled fans. I prefer switches.

I'll mention your tip to DH and have him look at it. It would save on buying new fans if we can get these to work.

changing batteries helped quite a bit----but working to rewire fans and lights on separate switches.
