I am about to retile (vinyl) about 400 square feet... kitchen, dining area, laundry room and a downstairs bathroom. It is currently blue and white checkerboard, but has seen better days. We are going with vinyl because we have a stilt home with wooden subfloors and making them ready for ceramic tile would be an enormous amount of work - and I would just rather lay some self stick tiles!
I wanted to go light this time - the rest of the first floor is a deep red hardwood (Santos Mahogany by BellaWood) except for the foyer, which is slate colored tile with a large area rug.
My husband and I went to Lowe's and Home Depot and picked up 9 different tiles - all similar - stone looking - in pale colors from off white to sandy with a bit of pale grayish blue. I put them on the floor in a three by three section, and realized I like them all mixed.
Has anyone mixed vinyl tiles in a floor?
I get the feeling it would look like an old stone farmhouse floor... where not everything is matching.
I have been looking online to see if this is reasonable but have come up blank except for a line here and there that says "you can let your imagination run wild"
The tiles are all the same thickness, all 12" square, and have a similar luster.
Any ideas or websites that show something like this finished?
I'm not sure if I should just go for it or play it safe and pick just one of the tiles (or go with a checkerboard again)
I think it's all about what you like, if you put down a 3x3 area of mixed tiles and liked the look then go for it. Personally I would do them all the same color, but that's just my personal taste and if you like the other look, make yourself happy. The only time I would advise you to go against what you like is if you're planning on selling the house soon, then you're probably better off doing something more standard.
