Dea -

Did you put in a perforated pipe or drain tile behind the walls?

Yes, we sure did! Perforated pipe. They're all buried now and run all the way out to our septic field.

Would love to see how that's done if you have any photos (even if they aren't good photos). Or maybe an explanation on how it's done. I believe I've heard that gravel is used as well. Thx for any tips.

You place the perforated pipe at the bottom of the wall on the side where the dirt is. You cover it with at least 10 - 12" of gravel. Then you put landscape fabric over it so the dirt does not get into the gravel.

The higher the wall, the higher you want to go with the gravel. It's not the soil that pushes against the wall - it's the water. Basically, a retaining wall is a dam, so the more easily the water can drain away, the less pressure on the wall.

So you connect the perforated pipe to a solid pipe that drains away from the wall. Also - by having a perforated pipe at the bottom and gravel on top, the water drains to the lowest point of the wall and the water pressure exerts the least amount of force at that point.

Hope this helps !
