Hi all. Just purchased a house thats 20 years old, and the central air unit is as old as the house is. I have a home warranty on the house, and when I turned on the AC for the first time about 2 weeks ago on an extremely hot humid day, we found the unit didnt work.

Called the warranty company, and after 2 weeks they finally sent out this company to fix it. Turns out, he said it was a "bad compressor anti-shaft cycle board". He bypassed the board, and reconnected the air conditioner and stated it would work fine that way. He said he would try to locate the part but he wasnt sure if they made it anymore-but that the air conditioner has other safety mechanisms in place and this part wasnt necessary for the safety or usage of the unit. Doesnt sound right to me-is it?

Thanks, Dawn

Hi!! Same thing happened to me, and I ended up replaceing the whole thing, then found out that some board was bad. I really am upset that I spent $6K for a $400 board. I don't know if in your situation it's safe to bypass a safety thingy, Hope someone more knowlegeable will help you out.

Hi Loren. They are trying to locate a replacement, but it is difficult due to the age of the unit. According to what I was told, the worst thing that can happen is that the unit will short out if there is some kind of surge...I guess we will see what wil happen at this point.

ugghh-6000.00 instead of a 400.00 repair. That hurts...but at least now you know your ac will be around for a long time...

OH NO ! I hope everything will be okay with your A/C. I don't know anything about electricity or A/C, but I have seen things short out and blow up..I am originally from Hawaii and the old building codes were really relaxed so when things blew, they really put on a show!! Boom, sparks, crackle, pop!!!

Sorry, I just had a silly moment there. I just had that picture in my mind. Can you tell I have done some shorting myself?

Are you sure it wasn't called an anti-short cycle board?

All new solid state thermostats have this feature tied into its program anyway.

I know this is an old thread and I'm sure your problem is solved. We to had a home warrenty on an almost 30 year house. Those kind of warrenties are pooh. They cover squat and take their time in coming out. We ended up just paying for a new AC unit when ours went ca-put.
