Need to find a source of 50-100 year old pine boards near Houston, TX.

Repairing a house built about 80 years ago, and don't want to use modern boards if we can find "period" replacements. We are salvaging any we remove from it for future work, but haven't located 1x6 plain and T&G.

The rafters are true 2x4, joists are true 2x6. Fun and educational to see how much pride and precision the carpenter(s) had. All walls have wood boards for siding inside and out, and the ceilings are also solid wood. Inside was "modernized" in the late 40's - early 50's, so some sheetrock, paneling, and wall papering was done, but not nearly as well as the initial construction.

Speaking of sheetrock - the stuff is only 1/4 inch thick. Any ideas where some of that could be located would be helpful, too.

Thanks, in advance. I know the DG family will have some good suggestions.

Hi Bubba- I saw your posting as I was scanning repairs & remodeling, maybe I can help. Check online or yellow pages for building salvage, Habitat for Humanity Restore Stores, architectural antiques etc. I was an over the road semi owner/driver for 22 years found places all over Texas and Louisiana- the whole South. With all the tear downs and rebuilding from Katrina there should be a ton of things available. I dealt in antiques and totally remodeled a 110 year old Prarie 4-square farmhouse back then. Builders really did take pride- no attitude of "that's good enough" back then. If you can't find sources let me know and I'll try to help. Any big box building center- Lowe's or Home Depot has 1/4 " sheetrock 4x8 sheets avail in 1/4, 1/2 and 5/8 inch thickness, sometimes aval. in 12" long by 4" wide too. I wouldn't recommend 1/4" for anything except ceiling work- it is just so flimsey 7 if you do use it on ceilings don't rely on just sheetrock screws to hold it in place- I use panel adhesive on the back to prevent any problems with sags then the screws. Have some sources on tin ceilings, mouldings and accents if you need. Good Luck- Kathy

Thanks for the offer, Kathy.

The current tenant has located some 5" and 6" T&G that we will be able to use.

The big-box stores here have 3/8, 1/2, and larger sheetrock, but no 1/4.

Have posed the issue to several "old hands" and the two most common answers are; 1) metal plaster lath & plaster, 2) 1/4" plywood, and joint compound.

We are about to expand a closet, so maybe if we are careful there will be a big enough piece of the thin sheetrock. Only need a piece less than 2' square, to replace the water damaged ceiling. It had been spackled, but cracked and looked really bad. The roof has been repaired, so no "new" water damage now.

Replaced a water heater there last weekend - found some more anomalies, though. there was a cutout at the doorway that was covered by some 1/8" ply and linolium (sp). Used some of the "found" 3.5" T&G and corrected the problem. Squirrels had quite a stash of pecans on top of the beams under the joists.

Moorhead - I grew up north of Bemidji @ 3-island lake. Small world, eh?
