I'M NEW could someone help me by sending me a picture diaphram or phyaramid of using two different rocks,I have flat rocks for my top and boulder rocks all sizes for my bottom half..I'm guess I'm trieing to ask from what size do you start with for my flat rocks up top???? My families gonna make it where small amounts of water will come off the top and onto my gravel in the middle of it when it rains though...I also thought about dried plants there also so I don't have too anything at all to them much...Could anyone help me...Please!!!!! Hi Mrssims, I am really confused as to what it is you are trying to build with your rocks, are you looking for a rockery bed where the the bed is like a mound with rocks and soil and then you plant into the soil pockets, OR, are you looking to create a dried rock/river bed where plants look like they have addapted to the dry ground and scramble into and over the dry rocks and pebbles, OR where you see natural planting growing in say an old disused quary/basin, can you be a bit more precise with your plan.
Whichever way you wish to design anything with rocks/flat stones and gravel together, you will need to dig out the plot and start with larger rocks as foundations, slightly slopeing backwards as you place them into situation so they dont topple forward, or it will slowly slide appart with the weight of topheavy rocks, but that does'nt mean that once you have foundations in place you cant dress this with different gradients of rock size and gravel, I would get your family to start laying rocks on the ground and design things as to what you feel looks natural to you, and then start to build it IN the plot you wish to have this placed, do remember, these gardens are not always easy to care for as within a few years they can look rather like a heap of stones with weeds growing out from it IF not tended regularly and plants that suit this type of habit. remember leaf and texture are also important. Maybe you could all go and look at landscaped areas close to your home, be it at park, zoo or water garden, they will have lots of ideas to suit your needs and you can take some photographs, maybe a scetch book for a rough drawing and plant list.
