I wouldn't fertilize them at all until after the seeds have germinated and they have their first set of true leaves. After that, I'll let someone else advise you since I don't grow MG's.
Morning Glories don't require much fertilizer. If you fertilize them too much, or plant them in soil that is too rich, you'll get all foliage and no blooms. A lot of folks only fertilize Morning Glories twice a year, some fertilize once a month. Most use a water soluble fertilizer like Miracle-Gro or Fish Emulsion. You want to avoid pellet fertilizers because they are slow release, giving your plants a little bit of fertilizer every day.
Plant your Morning Glories where nothing else will grow because the soil is so poor and they will thrive! If you don't have poor soil then buy some cheap potting soil at the grocery store and keep them in big pots.
I had years and years of trying to grow MGs, just pouring the Miracle Gro on them and wondering why they wouldn't bloom...when the whole time my neighbor with the brown thumb had the most gorgeous MGs you'd ever seen! ROTFLOL
Couldn't agree more. I planted some in rich soil and mulched them carefully, they all died. I also threw some in sandy soil that I don't think gets water nor nutrients even weeds wouldn't grow. Those exploded into 14 ft+ they just loved crappy soil. I did water them when I saw they were stressed, which was infrequent.
Here's a tip, morning glories HATE dirt particles on their leaves while young. When it rains, and dirt splashed on the leaves of mine the dirt burned holes through them and deformed them, most of mine died from dirt burning holes through the leaf while young (usually 2-4 leaves). I ended up after rain storms going out with a spray bottle full of water to spray off any dirt particles that splashed up on them, and that saved the rest until they grew high enough it didn't matter the dirt splashing on the lower leaves. Also, there's a little green fuzzy caterpillar that loved to eat mine. I found it usually hiding in the newest, smallest tiny fresh leaves during the day. When I noticed something eating mine, and no trace to be found I learned where the bugger hid.
