| I was about to explode a couple of months ago! My DH just kept bringing home one pile of junk and another. Then a friend gave him a pile of debris from a remodeling project!!! I was going crazy, cause this stuff was just getting to be too much behind his workshop! I begged him to either get rid of it or Please do something with it!

Oh my gosh, Euf, you should see my hubby's piles.
It would make you appreciate yours even more, LOL.
We're talking serious piles. Heaps. Mounds. And to
think we have land behind us with trees, why can't he
put the stuff behind the trees? No, he has to put it smack
in the middle of what could be the back yard.
Sigh. |

dragged them down the side road, gravel and all. Lo and

| (((GROUP HUG))))
My sister in law did leave. While I think she has a great guy who
does much, my hubby's piles are piddly compared to his. I had never
seen so much stuff in my life. Sis reports he just buys it at auctions
and never sells anything, so he isn't into the profit aspect, but he
doesn't use the stuff, either. She's left him before and she'll leave
him again. But one day he may tell her not to come back. :-o
Any of you have an auto salvage in your area? Namely your home area?
Like the back yard?
Yep. Just when I convince the guys to hide the cars, trucks, boats and more
in the back woods, they drag some heap of junk up front because they are
'going to fix it up' or 'going to get it running'. Ugh! Last summer it was the
"Cool, let's fix up this Camaro." Yeah, there it sits. Next to the dead truck,
near the "Ain't never gonna work ice cream truck" near the "Ex brother in
law's dead rice burner" which is by the windowless dead box van to the
right of the dead lawnmower and the dead motorcycle without a seat.
Then there are motors and things. I'm not talking about valid pieces of
machinery, folks. After an engine block sat in the grass for years on end,
I told hubby I was going to move it and plant flowers in it. He gasped "Oh,
no, that engine block is worth a lot of money, you'll ruin it!"
Umm. How so, compared to it being left in the elements for the past 13 years
or so??
I've even threatened to call one of those guys who want to come and haul
off your stuff free of charge. Hubby claims it is a bait and switch type thing,
they show up, say it will cost you money because it is a lot of work, then they
get mad if you don't want to pay them. I say, hey, if you want to pull up in a big
truck and take the crap free of charge, fine.
Honestly, I'm sure some of the stuff can be used, recycled, fashioned into
something or even sold in flea markets, but it's like fabric. Women love fabric
and many (yes, I confess) have oodles of it and two sewing machines. But
I'm never going to make squat with it, so out it goes.
I've reached a point in my life where I just want to sack up all this meaningless
crud and have space to breathe. Wish hubby would do the same.
:-)

| Oh My Heavens , We have started a mutual admiration society here! Group hugs and sympathy tears all around!
I have been through the back yard auto junk yard thing too, Wuvie! Thank Heavens My DH and I have only been married for 8 years and have no Sons to blame the problems on! DH came into the marriage with 4 truckloads of what he called " Good Stuff" and a 1939 Plymouth Truck! ...Oooooh Ahhhhhhh Wow Weeeee!!!!! Now this truck was in such gooooooood condition that we had to haul it from North Carolina to Georgia onthe back of a specially rented U-Haul It trailer , Hooked to the back of a Specially Rented U-Haul it Truck , that had to carry all his "special Stuff"! ( Get the Drift now?) Needless to say nothing was left in N.C., It all came with us to Georgia! then it just grew!!!! finally after the truck sitting in our back yard behind the Work Shop for almost 5 years , just rusting away ( we want even talk about that argument) He met a new friend that had the same love of ole rusted junkie falling apart trucks. After many months of debating and worrying and deciding ( and fingernail biting on my part) he decided to sell it to him! I nearly fell out with disbelief!
So now instead of Car parts and engines and such, He now is very selective. We only have to push aside paths through piles of old wooden doors ,shelving, screens, chairs, parts of old worn out restaurant booths , and other such "Wonderful Stuff"!!! ooooohhhh. I'm Soooooo luckeeeeeee!!!!
All Kidding aside though , He does do wonderful work with the wood. I just wish he could keep up with the growing horde, and throw away the scraps! |

| LOL Euf, are our hubbies brothers?
When I met hubby, he still 'lived' in the house he once
owned with his ex. Suffice it to say neither was into tidy.
After we worked on the house enough to sell it, we moved
to the country. My mouth is still dragging the ground after
what hubby did.
Behind his little workshop was a good little patch of land.
THAT pile was hidden by the workshop from the view of
the backyard. The man actually hauled all that crap to our
new house. Yep. I'm SO not kidding.
Styrofoam ducks missing their heads, all chained together
on a broken, rusty chain. Wait, that's not garbage, those are
my hunting ducks!
Just one example.
I'll confess, there was a time I thought that if I just throw one or
two things into the trash each week, he would never notice. Yeah,
when I'm 86 it will be gone. Pfft. After a grand argument years ago
I convinced him that a car belonged in the garage, not a heap of
crap covered with a raggedy tarp.
If I ever get brave, I'll take a picture of
the piles in the woods, but only if someone else is willing to
do the same. LOL

| Wuvie,
How so very funny-NOT, but the way you tell it I just got to laugh!
My DH keeps hauling stuff home too-it always i am going to fix it or we could use that for something. Why do i need another microwave? Personally i don't use the one we have! He is always looking for something to fix-a light, a chair, of course it's all when he's got time to do it. Anyting around the house needs a fix doesn't get fixed until he needs it.
hahaha-Once I said if you don't get this fixed I am going to call a real Handyman and I am not going to care how much it costs. After much manly grunting as to all the reasons it wasn't done-he stomped off and fixed what ever it was(that is just how small and stupid it was) Time finished was like all 20 minutes...And TOOLS! lets just not even go there.
Seriously i think it is really just a guy thing! My little guy is always fixing things-He started at age 5 when he took apart his brand new remte control car, a drum set, several radio's-this list grows-Oh man, now I need some coffee just to keep the energy going!
Betty-For some reason i have the feeling that your "Piles" are in some sort of neat and orderly fashion. Our or i mean DH piles alittle hear a little there and everywhere. what a mess, and now that i think about it why on earth do We need to have old bikes for Extra parts? We always end up buying the part cause oh geeze can't find or get to that old bike.
All I can do is shake my head tsk tsk-
Eaufaula! What a beautiful new cedar bench-I am with you it's a keeper, I'ld take it off your hands but i am afraid I'ld have to wait 5 years to pick it up! I hope you get to enjoy that piece-You go girl keep him busy. Awsom creations.

| We both drag home junk we're gonna use and rarely seem to get to it. Been trying to actually put some of it to use lately. Some of those graniteware pots and old metal buckets that have rusted holes in the bottom are finally becoming flower pots this week. Oh but there's lots more junk to get through. I did finally use one of the two table bottoms he brought home from somebody's garbage. I found a round smoked piece of glass while cleaning up where a friend moved a free trailer from. So when DH got to griping about those things being in the way (remember, he brought them home), Alah! I thought!Glass on table legs (three curved legs that meet in middle) sitting on my measly small deck with neat two tiered brass basket with flowers planted in it (yardsale find, just had to add the stem) and potted plants all around, with two comfy chairs so we can sit and enjoy.
Oh!!! There's so much more to do. So many things to make, and I love getting ideas from you guys! It helps to know there are more like us out there, with piles of junk we're gonna do something with. YES!! Our place may look like white trash, but I don't feel like it. |

| Girlfriend, you aiiiiiin't riiiiiightttt!!! LOL Don't you wanna come over and see "my husband's garage?" I keep telling him it's a fire hazard, that we need a clear path through the jungle of junk. Let's see... there's an old recliner in there, baby crib that hasn't been used in years, a desk, an old timey child's school desk, an old typewriter table, I could go on and on. He is the dumpster diver. One mans' trash should be left in the trash!!!
My dad is ten times worse. His 'carport' has old milk crates, soda bottles, sinks and fixtures. I remember my mom complaining that it looked like Sanford's junk yard. I keep telling him he should put a sign out front that says "Salvage" and maybe he would make some $$! LOL
But no, I was never attracted to a neat freak, so here I am! At least your hubby uses his stuff and actually makes something. This stuff has been sitting here for awhile! I wonder what they say about us when we aren't around?
School is out and every week I am going to freecycle stuff little by little, that way he won't miss it! Shhhhhh!!!! Especially when the munchkin goes to grammas. There won't be anybody to tell on me! HAhahahah!!! |

| WoW Eufaula,
Your husband makes beautiful jewelry!!!
I've enjoyed everyone's stories and can totally relate. I have one of those areas outside from my husband too. Every now and then he has a "period" and does a bit of hauling stuff to the road for big trash. He's a carpenter and brings home a lot of materials that he just knows we'll put to use. There are several doors on the side of my house, and a perfectly good Maytag dishwasher that I hope to someday have in my kitchen. My dishwasher went out 2 years ago. We are about to remodel the kitchen (so he told me 2 years ago) and that is why I've done without.
I can't complain though because I"m a dumpster diver myself. And not only that, I'm a collector of stuff from the thrift stores. The house is filled with stuff! I sold on ebay for a while, so had an excuse for some of it. Some I've given to my daughter who still has a store on ebay.
I love taking photos in my back yard of my plants. I have to keep in mind that I don't want that (as my mother used to call an unsightly area) "God-awful" area in my photos.

| Oh, Janet, I can relate.
When trying to photograph certain sections of the garden, we lower
the camera so as not to show the neighbor's piles, which is all you see.
I'll give my hubby credit, at least his piles are hard to see when the
greenery fills in for the summer, LOL. Just when we thought we could
have a nice picture of this year's garden, the neighbors built a metal
garage to live in, and moved it back on their property. Hubby promptly
planted hedges, and is hoping for quick growth.
Betty, you are so creative! I've seen many pix on other threads and you
do so much!
Raggedy, I hear you, too. I often tell hubby when the phone rings, it must
be Sanford calling to get his stuff back.
Euf, ah, but you are lucky that your hubby does something with his junk, LOL.
And very nice, I might add. Two thumbs up for his outside art, I truly believe
that is true art, as it comes from one's imagination. Very creative!
I would not mind the piles if they were in the woods, or if my hub actually used
the stuff, but there is so much that is never going to be used.
I do confess, I have my eye on two rusty old box springs (which we found
buried in the ground, of all things, when trying to plant Hibiscus syriacus along
the fence) and entertained the thought of making some sort of wreath out of
them. They do look neat, all coiled up in nice little circles. But alas, another
project, another day. At least the box springs are in the woods. Whew!

| Wuvie, a great hedge is pink honeysuckle. We have it planted between our roses of sharon and they are already 3-4 ft tall and only a few years old. I think we got it from Burgess. It's growing so well my dad thinks he might have to get rid of a few ros earlier than planned so they can continue to grow. |

| Pepper, that would be a good idea, but here comes the mean in me.
We don't want anything attractive over there, nothing they can benefit
from, LOL. Aren't we terrible?
As much as I would love a flowering hedge, we don't want them to
gain pleasantries from our hard work. If we could afford it, an eight
foot ugly gray concrete wall would go up.
I suppose we could put up the wall but then plant pretties on our side, LOL.

| Oh, Pepper, I wish we could. But the fence would be, oh, gosh, HUGE!
Our property has one of those "Oh, alright, we'll let you drive to your house
on our land" things because the people up behind us built their house without an
access road. Now that we've given them permission to drive on the road,
the neighbors next door think it's alright for them to do the same now
that they have moved into the building in their back yard.
Long story short, we would have to build a fence the entire length of the
property, which is, long.
Hey, what if we just pile hubby's junk up to make a fence?
Bwa ha ha ha!

| Eufaula, Go rip out that hedge right now! Find something else or you'll regret it later. That awful thing takes over the world. Birds drop the seeds everywhere and they come up by the zillions under the hedge. You pull them up and break the roots, and twice as many come up the next year. We have been battling that hedge for years. Your only hope is to prune it before it makes seed. |

| Good morning all! Thanks for the sweet compliments and to you Ginger lily, thanks for the warning! Yep it can be pretty invasive! I think its called Chinese hedge! I grew up with it here! When I was a child everyone used it as a hedge! Now you can only find it in the woods or where an older farm house used to be! I usually do keep it trimmed very well! But I know too that it grows fast! That is why I went into the woods to get it! Im not to worried about where it is , on the 300 ft dirt driveway, separating our property line from the neighbors! We have a terrible time keeping them and the dogs home! LOL!!!
( makes me sound like a nasty person ,doesnt it)
On our side Im growing beautiful Azaleas and dogwood ! then there line and ours meet and its a mess so Im trying a hedge then I will plant Confederate Roses and Cherokee running roses on the fence! Oh well enough of the gardening plans on this forum I guess! Click the image for an enlarged view.

| I've thoroughly enjoyed reading the posts! I fully understand the DH's 'fixations'. Mine isn't into trash to treasures, but boats! Sitting in DD's yard up north, (not enough room here for it), hanging from the garage roof, sitting on the driveway with a beautiful cover over it...unusable, (almost 2 years of renovation and the gas tak suddenly started leaking, so thats another 4-6 months of the 'Ornament' being unusable) another one in the water (love that one) and dear god, over came a styrafoam 'float' the other day together with a huge pile of 'chain' (look what I've just bought from someone leaving Florida..., isnt it great, now I'll be able to add more chain to the anchors and use the float to set the anchors for the hurricanes)..., paddled with one paddle to get it home! ('You do understand that I HAVE to HAVE this since I HAVE to mend the dock damaged from the last hurricane and I can't use the dingy as the mussles will tear the sides of it...and I dont want to use the one hanging in the garage as the sides will get scratched')!! and so it goes...
To top it off I have an outhouse 'laundry' in the garage, which is pretty typical of the OLD Florida houses. At my age, I'd have thought I was far beyond this stuff. So I went on 'strike' some time ago and refused to do any laundry (105+ degrees in the garage in the summer) Not only an outhouse laundry, but its only 5x5' and to get there (a horrible corner) I have to carry the laundry and dance my way between bicycles & tools, buckets, fibreglass & teak bits and pieces which stand on end very dangerously! ...Now DH is an ace with Oxyclean!
Started going on strike about the kitchen now, so things are heating up. Drawings are now completed for an extension so we'll see where all this goes!
Beautiful crafts - So much talent!! I love the paintings! I've been haunting the thrift shops collecting wire 'baskets', small though they are, to use for my Vanda orchids so they can 'hang' from trees with their roots dangling in the air. I've collected so many glass/ceramic vases & tea candle containers from the thrift sotres that I'm overflowing...Have to pass some of them to my DH for her flower arrangement classes! They make beautiful mini vases. I wonder if she will thank me and take them to the nearest thrift store as soon as I leave! :) Click the image for an enlarged view.

I keep thinking I want a tiny jon boat to plant flowers in. See, you guys just have some really huge planters. Get with it girls and fill them up!
WUVIE, I do believe that hedge came from China many years ago. My mother (I guess, or someone before her) planted some around the farmhouse where I grew up in LA (that's lower Alabama). That was probably back in the 50's or before. Problem is, they were not kept pruned and now the woods are full of them, every fence row is lined with them, they are everywhere in the deep south. If they would stay basically where they were planted it might be okay, like making a blind, but the seeds are dropped everywhere by the birds. When you see a little one coming up in your flower bed, pull it immediately, don't wait. I would be happy to eradicate them from the face of the earth. I do have to say though that the bees like the blooms and they kinda smell good. I still don't want them though. I own the old farmhouse property now and some years ago we hired a guy to bulldoze one area where they were so thick you couldn't walk through it. If you really think you want some, I can send you some little ones, I pull them up in my own back yard all the time.
seedtosser, your Flair pen sketch is beautiful, and Eufaula are those acrylic paintings or watercolor? You guys are so talented to be able to sketch and paint. I'm crafty but not an artist like that.
eufaula, have you and DH considered doing art and craft shows? DH and I did that for 20 years and probably still would be if his health had not deterioated. We eeked out a living making white oak baskets, dough bowls, lye soap, cornshuck dolls and storytelling.
If you do it for fun, I think it would be a lot easier than when you depend on it for your livelihood (sp?).
Was out of pocket yesterday, so I got longwinded getting caught up with you all. |

| I've threatened to do that several times over the past few months. In April, Connie and I went to San Antonio to visit our mother. While there we went to a nursery and there was an old red canoe (got one of THOSE in camoflauge on the other side of the house). It was filled with all kinds of beautiful flowers.
I don't see that boat going anywhere unless we freecycle it. I could paint it and plant it, but do I REALLY want it? Nope. I want a boat that BOATS!!!

| Hot dog, we have a boat ornament, too!
Gotta share a funny story, by the way.
Hubby just HAD to have a sailboat / windsail / whatever that thing is. So he paid $375.00, brought it home and stuck it in the back yard. He insisted that I keep the tags up to date, which I did for years until I rebelled. We've had it for, umm, thirteen years and it has never so much as been opened. It was not even new when he bought it, it's junk! That money is so down the drain.
It took years before I managed to drag it to the back without too much backtalk. Love the hub, but he's a big guy. Even though he's losing weight (has lost 40 pounds so far this year) he's never going to set foot on that sail thing.
Now back to the boat ornament. Yep, there it is in all it's glory. He takes the cover off it, talks a big story about fixing it, and then it sits there collecting rain. So I put the cover BACK on it and he gripes. Get that, would you? I'm covering it up to 'enhance' the look of this thing in our back yard, protecting the boat in the process, and he complains? This cover on / off squabble has been going on for years now.
Last year he spent who knows how much more with a new propeller, a new this, a new that, all new wood and hinges for the cubbies, and then it just sat in the rain, the snow.
He has a doctor's appointment this morning, and will be gone for hours, so guess what? The cover is going BACK ON! And when he gets home, he might just be facing a request to put the thing further back on the property, drag it to the auction or fix it and float it.
Here is the lovely boat featuring a huge pile of "I'm going to split this wood" in the background. Click the image for an enlarged view.

This is a very old truck which still sort of runs, he is welcome to keep
it since he's had it so long, but not in the back yard, please. Drive it
once a week or something, move it, relocate it.
The frame thing has evolved from "Going to be a building for storage"
to "A big chicken house" to "A building to sell things from" to "The frame
for a greenhouse" and more. And yet there it sits looking lovely.

This, my friends, is not a pile of steel rods which could
be welded together (with the welder he owns) and bent
with the pipe bender (with the bender he owns) then
fashioned into a frame for a greenhouse / hoophouse.
No siree, Bob, this is genuine gettin' rusty stuff, my friends.
Just stuff. We would not want to decrease the value of it
by making something useful when it could sit around gathering
interest, shock and awe.
Alas, from the road you do not get to enjoy such beauty, so anyone

Ours is dead now. One tax return was blown on such a

something to have the dead thing dragged back home when
it died on the road during hubby's hunting trip.
Then he spent over a hundred on some cracked block repair

do last week? He bought a two dollar metal hinge for the cabinet
above the sink in the motor home.

The little building houses all of the leftover lumber and trim from 5 years as a carpenter. The stuff too big to go inside, must be stacked against the front. Though it would look better around the side (there's 5 ft. between the building and the neighbor's fence), it would be too hard to get out, several years later, whenever that one board was needed.
There is an ugly table set up. piled with junk, that is supposed to be used for working. Lordy, if I only had a GIANT curtain to cover this up! Click the image for an enlarged view.

Here is a closer look at that hideous table. OH, by the way, that cardboard box, that is about 20 ft. long, contains soffit material, that a friend brought over,(leftover from one of HIS jobs) because he knew we had white vinyl siding. It's been there for a couple of months now and is a bugger for me to mow around. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| I really shouldn't complain. To be fair to him, here is my "nursery". Yes, this is MY mess. The deer was found on the side of the road by ME. I need to do something to make him stable and get rid of the lights that probably don't even work. There are planters of all shapes and sizes out there. At least I pick up things that are decorative! | The glass bricks that he brought home from another job, I hope to use in my front landscaping. The ponds too. The juice bottles have been collected over the past few months. I'm hoping to use them to take up excess room in the pond forms, rather than waste good soil. Click the image for an enlarged view.

I would strip the lights off and cover him with something
that would adhere to his body, making him a living shrub.

| I'm sure you all saw Connie's thread about making the deer topiary. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/720140/
Last weekend was the first time ever that she and I went garage saling together. She normally has cars to tint on the weekends, but her appointment didn't show up, so we went. It was so much fun shopping with her. We always have a great time when we shop together and find really cool things.
We were just driving around town, with no real destination. Connie said something like "deer butt" and I turned my head quickly and saw him. My legs were shaking so badly, I thought she'd never get her truck turned around in time to go pick him up. He was definitely the excitement of the day.
I do have plans to strip the lights and make a topiary from him. He's got a willow body over a basic form. He'll need some work done to make him where he stand upright without wobbling. All in all, I think he'll make a fine addition to my yard once he's planted. :-)
If I ever get tired of him, I'll be happy to ship him to you Wuvie. :-)

Ya'll just wait till I take some pics of "TORA-BORA" in our back yard! Yep, hubby keeps saying "We got to haul some trash to the dump" BUT it hasn't been done yet. That was Last Spring!!!!!! Oh, yes, we too have a boat out back BUT we do use it WHEN the river isn't dried up!! Oh and not to grip too much, but we don't have ANY grass in the back yard either! I am going to work on that this summer. |

| Every time I bring up using those glass bricks in the scheme of the front landscaping, hubby says, that is so 60's!
He did put one section of them under the steps of our deck. There are lights behind them and it looks really nice.
One day several months ago, Connie and I worked our butts off on the area where they currently are. Connie dug and dug until the area was level. We used big column {leftovers from one of his jobs (think waybigo PVC looking columns about 2 ft. tall)} with a 2 X 10 to place them on. I had planned on planting those pond forms into a "salad bowl" of sorts. First thing hubby says when he comes home is, do you think there will be enough sun there for vegetables? The whole idea behind the project was that there would be something nice to look at in that spot as you enter the gate. Unfortunately, that is also the parking space for the mower. I could have found another place for the mower, but gave up on the project because of his negativity.
So I've been looking for some place else to use those glass bricks. I have a whole bunch of colored rope lights that I bought on sale after Christmas several years ago. I think they'd be beautiful it up at night. I would like to have them "framed" in cedar and mounted where the little fence is in the front yard. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Yes, that is my home, thank you for your kind words. We've enjoyed living here since 1989.
The work (written on that last photo) hasn't been done yet. That is what I have planned. What will actually HAPPEN, well... I guess we'll see. I have lot sof tropicals in my back yard that can be moved to the spot under the mimosa tree. There is a lot of dappled sunlight there, but also some pretty intense sunlight at certain times of the day.
The cactus and succulents in the lower left of the photo is a section of my backyard that I made this year. The front yard gets pretty much full sunlight all day long. That's why I planned on moving all of the C & S to the front. 90% of them are already in pots. There are big slabs of slate under them now and that will get moved as well.
The tree that was removed a few years ago was a monster. It was rotted through to the center of the tree, leaving a big gaping hole there around the stump. That's what needs to be taken care of before I put any plants out there. I could move some of the succulents, but knowing my hubby and his axe and his general habits of tossing stuff around when he's working, I'd feel better to start out with a clean slate. Once the stump has been removed, I'll fill the hole with something (not sure yet just what) and then cover the whole sheebang with black plastic and the slabs of slate, leaving space between them for aloe and bromeliads.
Once we get things rolling, I'll be taking more photos and will post them.

That might work!! So been resting when I get the chance! Anyways, Really do love the items you both make, And Thankyou for the response. Your right about finding an outlet for selling, It's not easy out there ! It's really too bad, As a lot of the items that are made through the love of crafting are sooo much better then those made with all intentions of profit and many don't take into consideration all the time and work ( And with certain people) The talent and tradition of certain items! I really hope that sometime along the line, You find a good outlet for your crafts because they really are very nice!!!

Would you believe I found my DH at the computer early one morning last week looking at a very specific eBay site...Yes, bet you guessed what he was looking at...BOATS...hardly had my eyes open, no coffee, not functioning well yet...but functioning well enough to recognize boats when I see them...internet or on the water! Squawked enough to thoroughly wake myself! What a start to a beautiful morning!!!! He reassured me 'he was just looking'! Wanted me to take a look as well, but I marched on...coffee was very important at that point!

| Hahahahaha ! These stories are wonderful ! Now don't y'all feel better exposing all those messes? I have two outside area's I am ashamed of. One I am working on currently...nearly finished with in fact on the greenhouse side. I am bound and determined to finish by the end of the summer and it will be lovely and usable. The other is behind the shop. An eight foot by nearly 30 foot waste of real estate. My renter helped me a couple years ago haul all the X's crap left back there (Air conditioning condensing unit carcases and coils) to the road. We had it all cleaned up and organized and could find whatever I needed, but the hurricane dropped a huge limb back there on top of all my neatly organized lumber pile then the vines took over so I can't even see much less get to all that nice lumber. Out of sight thank Goodness, behind the shop. I'll try to get a picture tomorrow. LOL UniQue's hubby ventured back there the other day after a huge pipe bender I knew was back there left by my X. Poor man was eaten alive from bugs, but he found it!
Daddy was a pack rat. I remember Mom was always so worried Daddy would do that to their yard. He towed home an extra wrecked Ford courier just like the one he already had for "parts". |

| I remember that little Ford Courier and the spare truck out back.
Connie, I can't think of a better time to post this photo of Daddy in Old Ugly. All of our vehicles had names that Daddy gave them.
Old Ugly was a 1958 school bus that had been parked at the church for many many years. I think he paid either $25 or maybe as much as $50 for it. It had grafitti all over it and Mom told him if he wanted it, he's have to paint it before he brought it home. Fortunately, Daddy was friends with the owner of the paint and body shop. And Daddy was an Ace Mechanic! He could fix just about anything with a rubber band and a paper clip. (Who needs duck tape?!)
Not long after getting the bus, he found out about a 1975 (the year was 1976, if I remember right) Argosi travel trailer that had gone head over end. The insurance company sold it to Daddy for $1500. He gutted it and put the stainless stove and stainless fridge, the AC unit, the Showers, and a whole lot of other really modern stuff into that old bus. Oh, and he sold the frame of the trailer for $500. He was retired USAF at the time and spent that year working on the bus. He did the majority of it at the Service Station he owned though because I remember it was quite a while before Old Ugly was brought to the house.
I graduated in 1977, and that summer, Mom and Daddy drove that old bus to Virginia and then on to see Niagra Falls. The only thing wrong with the bus was that the windshield wipers didn't work. When the arrived back in Texas, after a couple of weeks, I was told that it rained a cupfull on the windshield and they had no problems at all.
So you see, Connie and I come by our packrattiness, quite naturally. :-)

I noticed someone mentioned buckskin... here is a rather poor pic of a buckskin pullover I made years ago. I wear it when I ride my bike and it's held up great through a LOT of bad weather let me tell ya !!! I use to have fox tails on the shoulders but right now I have pig tails on my helmet and they sort of clashed so ...
The buckskin gets a lot of attention, more when I had the foxtails on it. People would ask me about it all the time...lol
Like I said not a great pic. I left the bottom hem natural cuz I like that look better and fringed the sleeves etc.

| I originally went with fox tails and elk teeth along with tiny bells to decorate my hide. But being in the wind, as you know, can be unforgiving...lol. Teeth don't hold up well to that kind of pressure and the bells were beatin the heck out of me!!
I had never even SAT on a bike when I bought my first one (this is my 3rd bike). It was just something I always wanted to do. Now I really can't imagine life without one... I plan to be a triker in my elder years...lol.
I don't see the pic ?? I know some of the ones I posted several days ago ended up disappearing from another thread. I think the gremlins are workin at Dave's right now...lol.
If you get the chance to get a bike you definitely should. As you know it's great therapy for what ails ya. I've got a very stressful life but being in the wind just seems to re-focus me as it pulls my troubles away. You just feel as if you're out there and part of nature, it's all so up close as you travel through it. I'm fortunate that I live in a rural area, I fear I wouldn't love it as much as I do if I had to ride in the city with the constant start and stop type traffic.
Although I confess there are days I swear I hear my name on the wind and just want to disappear into the horizon and never look back... it can be tempting !!

| I have checked in on this post periodically, and really enjoyed it. Glad there are others in the group who have "issues" like mine!
When my FIL died about 6 years ago, we filled a 40-cu-yard dumpster TWICE with the "unimproved treasures" he had collected in his yard. Since then DH has gotten better about the quality of his acquisitions.
Did someone say "boat"? We have had up to THREE floating contraptions in our side yard. But one finally found another home, and one went up onto the roof so I couldn't see it. I hear it when the wind blows, tho'... The big one is in the side yard on a rusted trailer with 2 flat tires. But I made him hang a brown tarp from the side of it, so all the WONDERFUL stuff shoved under it isn't visible looking out the bedroom window.
Of course, in fairness, there are also in the side yard 4 trash barrels for compost, 4 more for soil, mulch, etc., and one more for fancy gravel...but those are MINE!~~ |

I did get a raised bed going with veggies and starting on a small flower area. Wish I had wide open spaces, but then you can imagine how much more junk we would have. | Nice to see this thread active again.
Remember the boat in the driveway, forever breaking down and forever being worked on. A year ago I mentioned this. Its still around. Occasionally worked on. Nice cover is still intact though!!!...
Still on laundry strike...so DH is now an expert when it comes to Oxyclean!!!! :) New construction being done will solve the laundry problem, finally.
Imapigeon and Samigal, glad I'm not the only one with... hmmm... boat issues!
Can you imagine the astonishment of the construction workers when they end their day, leaving sawdust, nails, scrap woodm etc scattered hither and yon and when they arrive the next morning the place is swept, piles of wood neatly stacked, dumpster a little more loaded up, plywood relaid once again over the builders sand to form a walkway for me, so I dont have to wade through the sand to get inside the house. I dont know why they keep moving some my pieces away each day... I think they must roll their eyes when I bring out the strong boat salvage magnet, swinging from its attached rope. I traverse the working area, sand area, woodpile area, dumped sand area, picking up nails and scrap metal! What can I say... I've collected untold buckets of the stuff already!
Oh by the way, this is a new one for me. We have land crabs & giant guana's have inundated the south Fl area. A couple of pics of these monsters. The first one: 2 enormous holes appeared within the last 2 weeks in the sandy walk area! The ruler shows the size and the dowel shows the depth of the holes. The second one is of large Iguanas we have seen in our travels on the water. The Iguanas poop all over the dock and leave stains when one TRIES to wash it off. They are vegetarians and LOVE hibiscus shrubs. Well...last night someone finally said enough...and did a couple of them in. I'll not post these photos though! Maybe our gardens will have a little rest period from these horrors now! Irresponsible pet owners have caused a huge problem in FL with letting these things loose, and with few natural predators, they have taken over at the expense of the natural wildlife.

| Well, seeing this thread show back up in my watched list either inspired me ...or more likely shamed me. I have tackled the last unsightly mess this weekend ! I'm about 7 feet in thru all the vines and uncovered my treated lumber pile.
Hauled about 7 wagon loads of crap to the curb. Tires, a dead lawnmower, pool filter and ladder all entwined with what I figure must be Asiatic Jasmine. I dug up handfuls of the vine and chopped away until one item at a time was exposed.
The huge limb (way bigger than I anticipated, in fact it's the whole top two thirds of the tree) is still there kinda halfway propped up against the fence and crosses over all the back part so I can't go further until that huge bugger is gone. I have a chain saw but I'm skurrd to use it. :( The rest will be a breeze once that fallen tree is gone. No stuff/treasures back there to uncover...just vines.
I did make a dent in it tho and was able to park the wheel barrow and wagon back there and even hide the big ol' trash container and got all my lumber organized and up on cinder blocks.
Edited to space for Janet. :)

| HAHAHA Love that edit Connie! I didn't even see it before hand though. Thanks for thinking of me. :-)
I saw your progress yesterday and am mighty proud of what you've accomplished thus far.
When Rick took down our trees after the hurricane, he did them in slices about 6-8 inches wide. I assume he did that so they wouldn't be so heavy to move. (But we all know what happens when folks start assuming things) You may need to do the same thing. At least you'll have the wagon & wheel barrow to haul them to the street with. You can cut and the girls can haul them away.
On second thought, I think if I were you, I'd be using the Stimulus check to get someone else to tackle that tree. It is HUGE, still!

| Okay I wasnt going to go here , but I HAVE to get this off my chest and out into the open!
Well... My DH , wonderful artist and Packrat that he is , decided that He no longer wanted to be encumbered with a wife... so , I am now ,soon to be a single person again!
He decided to take everything that wasnt tied down or glued on...EVERYTHING that is but the trash and wood piles left in the yard! So after thirty days of the final decree of divorce, anything that was left behind is going to be sold or burned!!!!!! |

Let me know if there is anything I can do, even if it's an understanding ear that you need. I divorced over 4 years ago and remarried less than 2 years ago. I well remember the pain. I have also facilitated divorced support and recovery classes. ~ Pat |

| Eufaula, I'm sorry to hear your news. I sincerely believe its much healthier to live independently rather than live with someone with whom one is not happy. You have absolute control of your own experiences now; new adventures bringing curiosity, laughter and renewed friendships; completing things you'd put off for a long time, joining in social activities and even taking classes on subjects you've always wanted to learn about, be they new crafts, music enjoyment, gardening or bible study. My best wishes.

| Eufaula, my heart goes out to you as well..been there/done that..married to a wonderful man 25 yrs. - went and died on me a few days later at 47..felt lonely, remarried, thought I had the best marriage in the world, step daughter worked on making it a challenge...sold my home on the water, put money into the farm, stupid enough to sign papers that I'd not go after 1/2, and why would I, he was a man of his word and his word was he'd make sure I was taken care of..went down eastin our motorhome, enjoyed every sec, got home on a Monday night and on Tuesday morning had a discussion with step daughter and within an hour dh was home asking me to leave..which I did..devastated, thinking tomorrow wasn't worth living...no home/no car and less than $30.00 in my pocket..now what..but within the month with support of family and friends I purchased a home, found a job, bought a new car, enjoy friendship of all...and, can come home, put my feet up, do whatever I wish to do, buy whatever makes me happy and voila..new life..
So my dear, will say prayers for you, but know what can be overwhelming today can make you smile tomorrow..as for friends, know that most here on DG are willing to support you along your 'new journey' ! If it's okay I will travel along with you, saying prayers and holding your hand... |

My big plan and first step in getting All my Ducks in a row, is to get a job! A real job again, Shoot I worked for over 37 years, and the minute WE decided that an early semi-retirement would be great , He decided other wise!
My Prob. is that at my age the bigger companies consider me at 59 a liability and dont want to hire me for anything! But the thing is , He is 70 and the same companies tht I applied for He did too! Would you believe they called him in for interviews but NOT me! ( Of course he turned down the jobs by not even going to the interviews!) I cant even get a greeters position at Wally World right now!
Oh well... ( vent,.. vent..!) Shooot, Ill be fine and I WILL get a good job! I'll even have my employers wondering how they ever got along without Me! LOL!!!

| Hey There you wonderful Recyclable cuties! Oh I'm so much better than I was , believe me! As a Matter of fact , Other than finding a job tht will hire me, Ive found that I have so much more now than I ever thought possible.
I need to get my life back in order and get some kind of communication going that lets people know we( older, more reponsible , more organized ,and dedicated) Women are the ones that will be the better employee and or leaders in society! Whooeeee! Now does that sound political or What! ( Didnt mean to get on a Soap box, just came out!)
Now back on subject! I have been scavengering ( sp.) The left over mess, that Dear Ole Departed to parts unknown DH, left behind. Yuuuucky! I am just bewildered with what to do with most of it! I have been having a small but effective bonfire to rid of smaller bits and pieces of wood, paper, and "green" burnables. Until recently I was actually enjoying the task, because of the nightly relaxing meditation sitting by the fire.
Now we have a burn ban out and all burning has been stopped until Fall. So sad. Even in my rural area and way out back. Apparently , the cause of burn ban isn't due to fire hazard but air quality control! So now I have to call the Forestry service and request a permit each night, and hope to get one, which because of the State ban , will more than likely be denied.
So , Now I have the job of trying to ???? organize??? the mess. I have already seen the most Unhandsome heavy weight of a Rat lurking out there, deciding on how it wants to "organize" its new home! Looks as if I better get in gear and get busy!

We will be headed your way in the fall on our way from Nashville to Mt. View, Arkansas. We go there with DG's Melody every year. Maybe you can meet us on our way through with a lunch pail and a cold glass of tea. (Just kidding!)
Do you happen to know a children's dentist there by the name of Charles Hall? Many years ago he worked on my teeth when he was a student at the dentistry school in Memphis. My hubby was in school at Memphis State and we were as poor as Job's turkey. I chose to have all my dental work done at the school and was lucky to have found a great student to do my work. Charles was a great dentist... even as a student. I have often wondered if he is still alive. |

When we are there I like to imagine her growing up there and I remember all the stories she used to tell about the area. It was always home in her heart even though she lived in TN. It was too hard to make a living there since they were farmers so they moved to a place that had better farming land when she was a teenager. She used to tell us that you could hear the sound of hoes hitting rocks all around in the spring when people were trying to plant the land.

| To all of you ladies that have contributed to this forum, I've spent the past hour reading/looking/laughing with all of you. Thank you for giving me something to spend my sleepless time on. Keep on with the recycling, crafting, etc. DH and I moved to the country 10 yrs ago and brought most of our "stuff" with us, renting a space for it, paying too much monthly, only to finally move it into a huge building he had erected for it. We could have paid for the bldg. considering how much we paid monthly to store it and now the bldg. is still full of useless "stuff" and is a dangerous place to walk. Have to laugh though at ourselves. I had to quit going to thrift stores and buying "stuff" cause it has to be dusted and requires too much space in the house.

I am going to add a small space in one corner of the shop to show how to refurb some of our items. Each week (Hopefully) I will be decorating and or rebuilding items and taking their photos, before and after. Then we will offer them for sale!
I will post the photos here so you all can see the progress! I am really excited about this!
My first item will be a large wicker Chair and ottoman,... Sweet!
I will have photos tomorrow. ...Later Y'all Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Oh ya!!! You are definately going to be generating some interest! Don't forget to post some pictures in craigslist too. I have gotten some work and I know others have made some great connections that way too, and its FREE!!!
You will be displaying the item for at LEAST a week before sale? I'd suggest LONGER, so more people can see it. |

| After 29 years, I finally had enough. Had two kids so I stayed for the kids and the money. I made my break after the kids were of age. I already had a job. I just left-- the house and the gardens. The later was the hardest- but I made it on my own and I am just getting back into the dirt. I love it!! Never been happier. Do what I want and when. You go Eufaula!! |

| That is great. If you can find some fabric with a large floral print (think banana leaves) - I'm thinking of some that were used a lot for drapes in the 40's and 50's.
You are going to have so much fun!!!
I'm remembering a poem by Robert Frost that says, in part, "the life I live now is an extra life that I can waste as I please, on whom I please." You aren't obligated too anyone but yourself.

| Wow, What great ideas , Y'all! The Fabric would have to be an outdoor type or very washable, I was even thinking about maybe a heavy duty Terry Cloth. WE get all kinds of towels. The Fabric from drapery, Now thats a good idea too!
Jo , Old English , is a good idea! After a good sanding and cleaning. then I want to restain the arms and legs. You all are so full of good ideas thanks a bunch! |

| Hi all, not that I am into making treasure from trash but as a newbie to DG I have wasted, or maybe I should say used, way too much time going through your new and old threads (haven't made it back to the beginning YET!)
The idea of using towels or even fabric, if from the store, would be a plus during a re-do demonstration, it could make the watchers think of other uses for items they would not necessarity be looking for.
More business in that way as well as from the demonstrations would mean more kudos for you Eufaula and anybody would be happy with more of those. |

| Yep Its the real deal, Wicker that is~ Actually Rattan is the right word , I Think. This chair is really in good shape .. the cushions just need a good cleaning. they have removable covers, so into the wash they went. But the problem came up and hit me in the nose!!!
Apparently , someone spilled something on the chair cushion and it went into the foam rubber. I think by the smell, Milk, Very very sour. Oh well I will just get another foam cushion from one of the reject chairs. ( Yes sad to say we have a lot of non fixer Uppers too)
Now My idea is to take the existing covers and duplicate the design in the rattan onto the covers. After, that is, I've done a little color enhancement with some Acrylic paint on the rattan! |

| Hi to all,I just started reading this post page and oh my,.!Now I'm really curious, how is Eufaula doing?Such a beautiful woman,if I lived closer I'd run right there and help her do whatever and give her a hug. There hasn't been anything posted from anyone since July.Right now my mom is 64 and is dying from a genetic heart problem (hypertrophic cardiomyapathy) and DG,-T&T,and plant and seed trade and a lot of other things on the Message Board are what keep me sane.I feel I've come to know so many people on here from just reading ,that I'm not alone.Which I feel like sometimes.I told my hubby once that it's sad when you're alone but it is deafening to the soul to be lonely when you're in a room full of people that act like this is a perfect world.Hearing others complain about there hubby's, kids, junk or pets,or showing new things to make when you are broke and have a lot of junk that you don't know what to do with other than hit your hubby over the head with it for bringing it home.Or the one thing I have done is take him outside, stand him in the yard and say: Now honey look at the place through a strangers eyes and what do you see.Sometimes I feel like we are the hillbilly's of the 21st century. We have lived here such a short time and good lord the stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!But now I've got him to wonder if i've lost my mind.I'm looking for old bowling balls and bike helments, and colored glass. And everytime I get a package with seeds or plants in the mail he just hands it to me and shakes his head.I say WHAT?? Or I'll just look at him and say just shut-up and get your shovel.Everyone here is a God send.Thank You All!
Here is my BEAUTIFUL MOMMA .This was taken 1/19/2008 at my brothers wedding reception. The last function that she has really been able to attend. She even had to leave that early because she started to get really sick.My son who turned 21 on 1/7 sat and cried at the reception because she (my mom) was to dizzy to even dance with him.Made my heart ache. But she's still here with us today and that is all that matters(is just one more day).
